The fifth book in the Earth's Children series.

Doubleday. New York. 1977. Good First Edition, early printing with publisher gutter code S10 on page 447. Date (1977) on both title and copyright pages. Quarter-bound in black with tan paper boards and gilt lettering to spine. Almost all wear shown on spine with age-related wear to bottom of spine (see photo) that does not extend into the pastedowns, linear (0.1 in.) separation of rear board to spine on black cloth with pastedown still fully intact so hinge (board) is fully attached to spine. Brown discoloration (single fingerprint) to bottom of last page, rear flyleaf and rear pastedown. Age related speckling to lower text block that does not extend to any page. Unclipped (T.S. $8.95) jacket is very good showing normal shelf wear and minor chipping to edges.

Random House. New York. 1976. Quarter-bound in red with orange paper boards and gilt lettering on front (author initials) and spine. Copy is fine but downgraded to good plus due to PO name on flyleaf and footband. Jacket, now protected with removable mylar cover is clipped and has wear to bottom corner as well as a 0.75 in. cut on back of jacket. Inscribed and dated 8/28/82 on half title page by author. Ms. Angelou (1928-2014) published seven autobiographies, this being the third. Starting with a job working for a white women in a record shop the story moves to a marriage to a white customer to working as a "shake" dancer in sleazy bars to signing in popular nightclubs to becoming a featured dancer in Porgy and Bess. Porgy and Bess was the 1959 Musical that won the Academy Award for Best Origina Musical and starred Sidney Poitier (Porgy), Dorathy Dandridge (Bess), Sammy Davis Jr., Pearl Bailey, Claude Akins, Nichelle Nichols, Maya Angelou. 5.75x8.5 in. 269 pg.

Note - "Signed Book" sticker on cover professionally removed. Fine unclipped ($27.00) jacket protected with removable mylar cover shows minor shelf wear. It's 1932 and Violet Speedwell has lost her brother and fiance in the Great War (WW I). Author's name in gilt on front board, gilt lettering to spine. Price clipped jacket shows shelf wear, chipping to edges (top of spine and front) with paper loss on bottom of spine and front cover fore-edge now protected with removable mylar cover. A British spy must pretend to defect so as to frame a foreign spymaster but along the way falls in love only to be double-crossed. At 256 pages, the story line moves pretty fast and in the end, it is cold. A cold war era story at its finest. Basis for the 1965 movie starring Richard Burton and with the 1966 Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor going to Oskar Werner. 8.5x6 in. 256pg.

Barnes & Noble. New York. 2003. Near fine reprint of the 1972 novel with number line ending in 1 on copyright page. Inscribed by author in year of publication (2003) on title page. Canvas-colored boards with blue lettering to spine shows some wear on lettering to spine. Near fine unclipped ($19.95) jacket shows minor shelf wear and 0.25 in. white spot on upper right of spine. Written and published by Bobbs-Merill in 1972, the novel soon went out of print for thirty years; in part due to Bobbs-Merill filing for bankruptcy & thus lack of marketing and in part the author was hospitalized following completion of the novel. Following a 2002 documentary (Stone Reader) about the book by Mark Moskowitz the book resurfaced to resurgance in popularity and was re-published by Barnes & Noble. The novel chronicles the life and times of a young boy (Dawes Oldham Williams... D.O.W.) through three decades of life in the midwest and behyond. Promotional brochure included. 9.25x6.5 in. 586 pg.
