Venice: Lucio Spineda, 1628. SOLE EDITION. Hardcover. Fine. Contemporary limp vellum in fine condition (paste-down torn). The text is in excellent condition with a few instances of light toning (in gatherings O, S, and X), and a small worm-track in the margin of the first few lvs. The text is illustrated with woodcut diagrams. An extremely rare book. OCLC cites only 1 copy in North America (Columbia University) and 5 other institutional copies outside of Italy (two in Denmark, two in France, one in Switzerland). Vagnetti described the book without having seen a copy. Riccardi described an incomplete copy. First (and only) edition of this wide-ranging work on selected problems in perspective and its underlying geometry, largely organized around what the author considers to be commonly found theoretical or practical errors. Diano proves himself to be well read in the contemporary literature of optics and perspective, citing Kepler, Maurolico, Aguilon, and others. The final two chapters describe… Leer más

Venice: Lorenzo Basilio, 1728. SOLE EDITION. Hardcover. Fine. Bound in contemporary carta rustica. Untrimmed, with deckled edges preserved throughout. Fine condition with just a few leaves spotted. Extremely rare. OCLC and KVK locate 4 copies outside of Italy, only 1 of which is in North America (Harvard Law Library). The work has been attributed to Bartolommeo Mlechiori, who also authored a book on criminal law, "Miscellanea di materie criminali, volgari e latine, composta secondo le leggi civili e venete" (Venezia, 1741). The author's name appears only once in the book, on the final leaf of text as "Bart. Melchi."Problems addressed in Part I include: examination, by the court, of murder victims (with a special section on identifying victims of poisoning); identifying a murderer via cruentation (the common belief that the body of the victim would spontaneously bleed in the presence of the murderer); where to try murder by decapitation when the head is found in one jurisdiction and the body in… Leer más

Bologna: per gli heredi del Dozza, [1655]-, 1656. FIRST COLLECTED EDITION. Hardcover. Fine. Two volumes bound in matching contemporary vellum, lightly soiled. Internally, a fine, broad-margined set with the usual variable light paper toning associated with this edition and scattered light foxing. Minor faults as follows: a paper repair to the blank margin of one leaf and two short marginal tears, far from text in Vol. I, and another in Vol. II (in "Il Saggiatore"); light stains to margins of four lvs. (F2, Q2, T2 and V2) in the "Mechanica"; a few instances of light foxing; a few ink spots to one leaf; occ. minor blemishes. Complete with the requisite number of parts, half-titles and the one added plate. With an engraved frontispiece by Stefano della Bella and an engraved portrait of Galileo by Francesco Villamena. The text is illustrated with astronomical and mathematical woodcuts; those in the "Sidereus Nuncius" showing the moons of Jupiter discovered by Galileo and his iconic images of the moon as… Leer más

Descripción:
Florence: [Gianstephano di Carlo da Pavia], 23 October, 1508. THIRD EDITION, mimicking the layout and using the same woodcuts as the edition published at Florence by Bartolommeo di Libri, 24 Oct. 1495. Another Florentine edition, undated, was printed by Lorenzo Morgiani and Johannes Petri, ca. 1495-1496. Hardcover. Fine. Bound in 20th c. brown morocco. A fine copy. Savonarola's name has been censored on the title. With a fine woodcut scene on the title page showing Savonarola conversing with the Abbess and sisters of the Monastero delle Murate. On the final leaf is a Crucifixion scene with the Virgin, St. John, and Mary Magdalene. These woodcuts were used in Bartolommeo di Libri's 1495 first edition. Printer from BM STC Italian; place and date of printing from colophon. Sander, who attributes the printing to De Libri, regards the 1508 date of this third edition as erroneous, and assigns it to 1498, perhaps because of the use of the same woodcuts. Very rare. 5 copies traced in North America: UCLA,… Leer más
