London: Printed for Jacob Tonson, 1697. FIRST EDITION. Hardcover. Fine. An exceptional, and exceptionally large, "large paper" copy. This copy is complete with the engraved frontispiece, the extra plate depicting Vergil reading the Aeneid to Augustus, and all 101 of the magnificent engraved plates by W. Hollar called for in this edition: ten in the Bucolics, twenty in the Georgics, and seventy-one in the Aeneid. Bound in 17th-century paneled calf, very nicely rebacked in the 18th-century. The spine is separated into eight compartments, ruled and tooled in gold, by raised bands. There are two spine labels, one in red and one in green morocco, tooled in gold. The boards are framed by a single gold fillet. Internally, this copy is in superb condition with very little of the browning associated with this edition. Cambridge: Ex officinâ Johan. Hayes, celeberrimæ Academiæ typographi. Impensis Richardi Green bibliopolæ Cantab, 1694. FIRST EDITION of Joshua Barnes' Euripides. Hardcover. Fine. Bound in contemporary English calf, rebacked preserving the original spine. The boards are blind-ruled in compartments; there is an attractive red morocco lettering piece, gilt, on the spine. Aside from light wear and bumping to the corners, the binding is very well preserved. Internally, this copy is in excellent condition throughout. The Greek text is surrounded by the Greek scholia and flanked by a Latin translation, in smaller type. The second part is introduced by a divisional title page. "The merits of all preceding editions are eclipsed by this celebrated one of Joshua Barnes. Geneva: Henri Estienne, 1568. FIRST ESTIENNE EDITION. Hardcover. Fine. FIRST ESTIENNE EDITION. Bound in contemporary English calfskin, ruled in blind and with a small arabesque at the center of each board and fleurs-de-lis at the angles of the central compartments. There is wear to the boards and minor restoration to the upper hinge, as well as a small leather repair to the lower board. The corners are bumped with loss to the leather; rear joint cracked but firm. Internally, this copy is in very good condition with a few minor marginal stains. A worm has made a small trail in the blank, lower margin of the first signature, not affecting the text. With the fine armorial bookplate of George Kenyon of Peel, Esq. (1666-1728) to the front pastedown and an early inscription from Longinus (in Greek with Latin translation) on the free endpaper. A 16th c. inscription has been inked out on the verso of the t.p. Discreetly rebacked preserving most of the original spine, corners bumped; new endpapers. With the full-page engraved portrait of Chaucer bound opposite the title page and a second title page (leaf c1) with a three-quarter page woodcut of Chaucer's arms. A very fine, crisp copy with trivial faults: a burn-hole in blank margin of leaf E4; two small spots on leaf N3; lvs. T2-3 lightly toned, clear dampstain to gathering Uu; occasional rust spots. With the engraved frontispiece portrait of Jonson as Poet Laureate, by William Elder after Robert Vaughn, bound opposite the title. Hardcover. Fine. Bound in contemporary speckled calf, very nicely re-backed, boards lightly pitted, board edges and corners bumped (with some small losses to the leather), boards ruled with a double gold filet. The spine is richly tooled in gold, with two citron labels.
