Descripción:
Paris, Charles Gosselin, 1831.
Two 8vo volumes [205 x 126 mm] of: I/ (4) ll. for the half-title, title and foreword, 404 pp. ; II/ (2) ll., 536 pp. for part 2. Both titles are decorated with Tony Johannot's woodcuts engraved by Porret. Bound in blue half calf, flat spines. Reliure de l'époque.
First edition of the famous and first great novel by Victor Hugo.
Carteret, I, pp. 400-402; Escoffier 870; Vicaire, Manuel de l'amateur de livres du XIXe siècle, IV, 256-257.
This copy belongs to the second state, with the author's name on the title and the fictitious mention "Seconde edition" below the title.
"Since Gosselin's copy appeared at auction (Leroy auction, March, 26-27th, 1931, N°328), it became indisputable that the mention of a second or third edition doesn't take anything from the first edition nature of a book.
Gosselin-Leroy's copy bore indeed on a fourth edition of Notre-Dame de Paris, 1831, the following autograph note:
'First edition published in 1100 copies that have been, following the… Leer más

Very scarce first edition of the first treatise on gastronomy by Menon.
Vicaire, 588.
This treatise was published anonymously, but the name of the author, Menon, appears in the privilege placed at the end of the first part: on August 26th 1738, Menon gave up this privilege to the widow of Prudhomme who would give it up to Michel-Etienne David and Pauls du Mesnil.
The 8 folding plates placed in the first part represent tables set for 24, 16, 50, 30, 14, 18, 20, and 80 place settings.
" No culinary author obtained more re-issues of his works. His works are indisputably those we consult the most". (Michaud)
We know nothing about the life of Menon.
" Marin had… Leer más

First edition of the utmost rarity of this work dedicated to photometry.
Martin, Catalogue de la bibliothèque de feu M. Burette, 5546; Monge, Dictionnaire de physique, IV, p. 293.
It's in the 17th century that European scientists make the biggest discoveries in the study of light.
Photometry that appears during this time doesn't have any measure instruments; it will establish its bases by comparing light sources.
Then, "it's struck by the invention of the barometer, the thermometer and the hygrometer" that F. Marie asked himself if, by imitating them, it wouldn't possible to find a means of measuring light".
(J-E. Morère, p. 339, La photométrie : les sources de l'Essai d'Optique sur la gradation de la lumière de Pierre Bouguer, 1729.)
