These wonderful volumes, printed in Bologna, are illustrated with copper-engraved titles and portraits. The text is illustrated with over 4 500 woodcuts showing birds, fish, reptiles, mammals, insects, crustaceans, human monsters, minerals, trees …
The eleven titles in thirteen volumes constitute Aldrovandi's complete works: each are in first edition except the De quadrupedis solidi pedibus.

A marginal tear on pp. 105 and 465 without loss, lower corner of p. 505 torn up not affecting the text, small wormtrack in the margin of pp. 247 to 270, some light marginal foxing, outer margin of the first 3 ll. slightly trimmed, small burnhole in the frontispiece. The coloured plates were drawn by Prisse d'Avennes, who worked in Thebes from 1839 to 1843 with the botanist George Lloyd.
