From lower cover: this book covers the period of unrest and civil war that broke out in Rome after the murder of Julius Caesar and continued until the final defeat and death of Antony 14 years later. The chapters were written jointly by M. P. Charlesworth, one of the original editors of the Cambridge Ancient History, who was responsible for the sections on Italy and the West and Sir William Tarn who dealt with the East. The authors have kept a judicious balance between the two sides in their narrative of events from Antony’s assumption of power, the establishing of the Second Triumvirate, the proscriptions, and the defeat of Brutus at Philippi, and continue up to Octavian’s final triumph over Antony at Actium.
