Descripción:
Sienese easel painter and manuscript illuminator Sano di Pietro (1405-1481) was the head of a workshop that fulfilled the demands of civic and religious institutions in the city. His production, technically always of a very fine quality, was rich in decorative effects and characterised by a brilliant palette. His work as an illuminator is documented from the end of 1445 when he decorated a Psalter for Siena Cathedral.
Provenance: The dimensions and style of this leaf almost perfectly match those of a missal in Bruce Ferrini, Catalogue 1 (1987), no. 45, Use of Rome, illuminated by Sano di Pietro and doubtless from Siena.
Recto: Rubrics in red and capitals touched in yellow. Original foliation "XXIII" in red pen. Text written in two columns in black ink on vellum in Latin in a precise, gothic script. Three two-line decorated initials alternating in red with blue pen flourishes and blue with red pen flourishes and a number of similar one-line initials. One three-line illuminated initial 'F' in blue,… Leer más

Descripción:
The leaf is from the Lumen Animae (Light of the Soul), a curious encyclopaedia compiled about 1300 by Berengarius de Landora (see Notes). It gathers together quotations on relevant themes from authors as diverse as Aristotle, Theophrastus, the elder Pliny, Ptolemy, Solinus, Ambrose, Augustine, Jerome, Isidore, Hugh of St Victor, and Avicenna to form a handbook of medieval knowledge of all sorts. It contains chapters on medicine & natural sciences, the human constitution, psychic and abnormal states of the mind, the choice of food, prescriptions for physicians, animals, herbs, minerals, etc. Berengarius' intention was to provide material for illustrative sermons by preachers, to explain the natural and moral world in terms of the all-pervading nature of God. It was immensely popular in the 15th century as a reference work, a late medieval bestseller.
Verso: 43 lines of text in Latin printed in two columns on laid rag paper in two sizes of a Gothic typeface. Headings, capital letters and paragraph… Leer más

Descripción:
A finely printed leaf from the Works of St. Ambrose
with elegantly penned decorative capitals.
Ambrose (born Aurelius Ambrosius; c. 340 – 397), venerated as Saint Ambrose, was the Bishop of Milan, a theologian, and one of the most influential ecclesiastical figures of the 4th century. Ambrose was serving as the Roman governor of Aemilia-Liguria in Milan when he was unexpectedly made Bishop of Milan in 374 by popular acclamation. His literary works have been acclaimed as masterpieces of Latin eloquence. Tradition credits Ambrose with promoting "antiphonal chant", a style of chanting in which one side of the choir responds alternately to the other. He is also remembered as the teacher who converted and baptised Augustine of Hippo. Western Christianity identified Ambrose as one of its four traditional Doctors of the Church. He is a patron saint of Milan and of beekeepers.
Recto:52 lines of Latin text printed on watermarked laid rag paper in four sizes of a gothic font. Page and chapter headings and… Leer más

Descripción:
Early Bibles often incorporated a wide variety of aids and addenda, such as calendars and tables of lections, biblical summaries and devotional treatises, to facilitate prayer, preaching and study.
Guiding readers through the long and complex text of the Bible, none was as popular as the "Interpretations of Hebrew Names in alphabetical order". It was usually found at the end of the Bible after the Apocalypse.
Recto: Ruled in red with text written in brown ink on fine vellum in Latin in a precise gothic minuscule script in three columns of 55 lines. The text is written in remarkably tiny and well formed letters, so small that there are four lines of text to the centimetre, or nine lines to the inch. Two Lombard style Illuminated initials in red and blue.
Verso: As Recto.
Origin: Italy, probably Bologna.
Date: c. 1250
Content: The leaf contains a section of the "Interpretations of Hebrew Names in alphabetical order", (Interpretationes hebraicorum nominum secundum ordinem alphabeti) starting… Leer más

When Jerome translated the Bible into Latin, he was well aware of the importance of names. The Vulgate transliterated many of the Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek proper names of the Bible.
The text comprises a long alphabetical list of Latinised Hebrew words, followed by their meanings, translations or explanations. For the most part they are names of characters in the Old Testament such as David, Jethro, Ruth, Obadiah, Naomi, etc. as well as places like Hebron and Jericho, but the list also included frequently used words.
