Descripción:
Original red cloth (first binding). Joints very slightly tender, light soiling. A very handsome copy in original, unrestored condition. Half morocco case.
FIRST EDITION, FIRST BINDING, FIRST PRINTING (with page 213 mis-numbered 113 and sig. b present on the list of illustrations, points that were corrected in later copies of this edition).
A Tale of Two Cities is one of Dickens's greatest and most-quoted novels. "The force of the novel springs from its exploration of darkness and death but its beauty derives from Dickens's real sense of transcendence, from his ability to see the sweep of destiny . . . this is what emerges most clearly from one of his shortest and most powerful novels" (Ackroyd).
Dickens was emotionally vested in this great novel. He wrote, "It has had complete possession of me; I have so far verified what is done and suffered in these pages as that I have certainly done and suffered it all myself." The quality and strength of the prose is some of the finest he was ever… Leer más

Descripción:
First edition of Poe's first published collection of tales, one of only 750 sets printed. Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque contains many of Poe's finest tales including "The Fall of the House of Usher" and "MS. Found in a Bottle."The publication of these twenty-five tales marked the culmination of Poe's long struggle to get his prose tales into book form. In 1833-34, Poe had failed to see into print his planned Tales of the Folio Club. Most of these tales, with additions were published as Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque. The title is derived from Sir Walter Scott's 1827 essay "On the Supernatural in Fictitious Composition: "the tales of the arabesque are the product of an intense imaginative effort and the tales of the grotesque tend toward satire or burlesque." In the preface to the collection, Poe defends himself from those critics who have charged him with 'Germanism' and gloom, writing, "If in many of my productions, terror has been the thesis, I maintain that terror is not of Germany,… Leer más

Descripción:
First American edition, first printing of Hawthorne's final children's book. A spectacular American literary presentation copy inscribed by Nathaniel Hawthorne to Oliver Wendell Holmes: "O.W. Holmes from his friend N.H."
Holmes wrote about Tanglewood Tales with great enthusiasm in a letter to its publisher, James T. Fields: "Hawthorne's book has been not devoured, but bolted by my children. I have not yet had a chance at it, but I don't doubt I shall read it with as much gusto as they, when my turn comes. When you write to him, thank him if you please for me, for I suppose he will hardly expect any formal acknowledgment" (September 6, 1853).
The two were friends for many years. Holmes served as Hawthorne's pallbearer in May 1864. The next month he wrote in The Atlantic, "Our literature could ill spare the rich ripe autumn of such a life as Hawthorne's, but he has left enough to keep his name in remembrance as long as the language in which he shaped his deep imaginations is spoken by human lips."… Leer más

More than 130 feet of teletype paper in total, comprising 6 strips, each 8 ½ inches wide, in sections of varying length. Folded down into flat sections 18 inches in length. Minor wear, occasional short tears, faint red ink stain along one edge, last section with full horizontal tear across the text. First announcement of the D-Day landings, perhaps the most important event of the 20th century. This file of teletypes begins on the evening of June 5, 1944, with the recent Allied liberation of Rome. Early on June 6th, breaking news comes across the wire: "The German news agency Transocean says that the Allied invasion has begun." The reports continue with the first Allied news of the invasion, bulletin 95PA: "Today is D-Day. Allied Armies have landed on the coast of France in the mightiest military invasion ever undertaken. Tough American parachute troops, hardened in the Italian campaign, were the first to land behind Hitler's Atlantic wall." The final report of the day is a summary provided by… Leer más

Two joined albumen prints (9 ½ x 22 in.), unmounted. Light wear and foxing. Very good condition, with very good tones.
This landmark two-part view of the Temple Mount is one of the very earliest panoramic photographs of Jerusalem.
Robertson and the Beatos made the first series of photographs of Jerusalem in 1857 using the newly developed wet-plate method, which revolutionized photography. This is their stunning panoramic view of the Temple Mount. The Getty Museum's individual prints of this panorama are titled "Mount Moriah and the Mosk of Omar [actually the Dome of the Rock]" (left panel) and "Mosk el-Aska Solomon Gate" (right panel).
Robertson and the Beatos visited Palestine following their historic photographic work during the Crimean War. The names of the three men appear together in the registry of the British consulate of Jerusalem for March 3, 1857, marking the beginning of their photographic expedition. Antonio Beato went on to become the preeminent photographer of the upper Nile, while… Leer más

Large folio. 4pp. Neat separation at spine. A short article is clipped from the first page not affecting the Texas Declaration. Some foxing.
"The Unanimous Declaration of Independence made by the People of Texas" appears in columns 2-3 of the front page of this rare western newspaper.
The free and independent Republic of Texas was officially declared March 2, 1836. Over the course of the next several days, 59 delegates — each representing one of the settlements in Texas — approved the Texas Declaration of Independence. This rare Kentucky newspaper prints the Declaration in its entirety including the names of the signers. On March 6, four days after Texas declared independence, Mexican troops scaled the walls of Alamo. 183 defenders were killed. The Republic of Texas won its independence on April 21, 1836, with a final battle along the San Jacinto River.

Descripción:
In a run of the Gazette spanning January to December 1825. Folio. Blue paper boards. Very good.
A black tulip of American literature collecting, this 16-line poem is the earliest located appearance of any of Hawthorne's work.
"Material by Hawthorne, presumably verse, appeared in newspapers as early as 1819 according to a reference in a letter to his sister Maria Louisa dated Salem, Tuesday, 28 September 1819: 'Tell Ebe [sister Elizabeth] she's not the only one of the family whose works have appeared in the papers.' The work Hawthorne refers to has not been located" (Clark).
This copy is from the collection of Hawthorne's foremost bibliographer, C. E. Frazer Clark, Jr. According to Clark, the last copy to be sold at auction was the Stephen Wakeman copy in 1924.

Folio. 300 pp. ruled ledger, mainly written on rectos only. A number of typed financial statements tipped in. Original reversed leather. Very good condition.
This massive manuscript ledger charts the fortunes of the shows of Sam Harris, the famed Broadway producer and theater owner, from 1924 through 1934.
The ledger provides statements of weekly gross receipts, expenses, and profit or loss for hundreds of Broadway shows, touring productions, and shows in New York, Boston, and Chicago where Harris owned or operated theaters.
Theaters covered include the fabled Music Box Theatre (constructed for Irving Berlin and Sam Harris in 1921), the Sam H. Harris Theatre, and the Cort Theatre. Many of these theaters had long running hits, while others provided an endless cycle of plays and performers. For example, the Bronx Opera House brought in a new show every week, including Harry Houdini in 1926, shortly before his tragic death.
Many of the productions covered here are still familiar including No, No,… Leer más

Folio. 400 pp. ruled ledger, perhaps half blank, mainly written on both rectos and versos. Original reversed leather, spine present but detached, else very good condition.
This massive manuscript ledger charts formative years of the show business partnership of George M. Cohan, the "father of American musical comedy," and Sam H. Harris, the famed Broadway producer and theater owner.
Cohan was "the greatest single figure the American theater ever produced – as a player, playwright, actor, composer and producer" (New York Times
obituary). Born in the Lower East Side to poor Jewish parents, Harris was a small-time producer and boxing promoter when he met George M. Cohan. The men hit it off and formed a partnership beginning with Cohan's first full-length musical, Little Johnny Jones (featuring "Give My Regards to Broadway" and "(I'm a) Yankee Doodle Dandy"). Together the two revolutionized Broadway while creating dozens of shows and revues. They are buried side-by-side at Woodlawn… Leer más

FIRST EDITION of "On the Theory of Light Production and Light Absorption" (pp. 199-206). This classic in the history of physics is Einstein's second paper on the photoelectric effect. Einstein reconciles his and Planck's independent derivations of the blackbody formula E=hν. Planck's derivation of this formula ascribed it to a restriction on the energy changes possible when radiation is produced or absorbed by matter, which implied no restriction on the energies of either matter or radiation. Einstein's 1905 derivation ascribed it to a restriction on the energy of radiation alone, but in this paper, he proposes the modern idea that the energies of both matter and radiation are quantized, which led to his work on quantum specific heats.

FIRST EDITION. Gerrit Smith, one of the wealthiest men in New York, devoted his prodigious wealth and energy to the antislavery movement for decades. He provided financial backing for every aspect of the struggle, funding abolitionist societies, newspapers, and political parties, paying attorneys' fees, providing land and money to indigent Blacks and escaped enslaved families, and more. Frederick Douglass dedicated My Bondage and My Freedom (1855) to Smith, writing, "To honorable Gerrit Smith, as a slight token of esteem for his character, admiration for his genius and benevolence, affection for his person, and gratitude for his friendship, and as a small but most sincere acknowledgement of his pre-eminent services in behalf of the rights and liberties of an afflicted, despised and deeply outraged people, by ranking… Leer más

FIRST EDITION. This is a handsome set of Teerink's A edition, the true first edition.
As Sir William Temple's secretary at Moor Park, the young Swift had access to many travel accounts in Temple's library. A frequent reader of such books during his formative years, Swift began working in 1714 on his own fictional account of the travels of Martin Scriblerus.
The success of Robinson Crusoe (1719) helped spur on the writing of the book, a satire not only of travel narratives but of many aspects of eighteenth-century life including politics, science, commerce, and society. By the 1720s that work had become Gulliver's Travels. In March 1726 Swift came to England for the first time since 1714, bringing the manuscript of Gulliver's Travels. "To preserve his anonymity, Swift dealt with Motte by post… Leer más

Descripción:
Original green cloth. Minor fading and rubbing. An excellent tight copy. Cloth case.
First edition of Hawthorne's first collection of short stories. This important collection includes eighteen tales published in magazines and annuals and a newspaper—hence "Twice-Told." Many have become key works in the American literary canon, but in 1837, Hawthorne was perhaps still "the obscurest man of letters in America" (Hawthorne Centenary Edition).
Hawthorne's title, Twice-Told Tales, was based on a line from Shakespeare's Life and Death of King John: "Life is as tedious as a twice-told tale, / Vexing the dull ear of a drowsy man." The tales are "twice-told" because Hawthorne had published them individually in magazines and annuals before collecting them in this, his first published book. "To this little work we would say, 'Live ever, sweet, sweet book.' It comes from the hand of a man of genius. Everything about it has the freshness of morning and of May … these tales are national in their character …… Leer más

This is a splendid pair of Samuel Bourne views of the Qutb complex in Delhi.
The first photograph shows the Delhi minaret and "victory tower" at the Qutb complex, the tallest minaret in the world built of bricks. "The Qutb Minar is one of the most famous monuments in India and one of the most significant examples of early Indo-Islamic architecture. It is a tower of victory which also served as a minaret for the adjacent Quwwat al-Islam (Might of Islam) mosque. It was begun by Qutb-ud-Din Aybak (ruled 1206-1210), the first Sultan of Delhi and founder of the Mamluk or Slave Dynasty, and continued by Shams-ud-Din Iltutmish (ruled 1211-1236). It is 72.5 m (238 ft) high, and rises in five tapering fluted" (British Library).
The second photograph shows the screen of the Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque. "The screen, which is often referred to as the 'Great Arch', is 6.7 metres wide and 16 metres high. An inscription on the central arch states that it was built in 1199 by Qutbuddin Aibak. It was one of the… Leer más
