The earliest inscribed copy noted by BAL was also dated January 1, 1845. The Nortons were close friends of the Lowells, among many others in Boston literary circles. Peter Low was a bookbinder who lived over the Old Corner Bookstore (Ticknor & Fields' main office where Longfellow, Hawthorne, and others frequently met). Minor wear and a few stray marks, but a very attractive sharp set of this rare collection of Carlyle's works, edited by Emerson. The edition was 1,000 copies. The first two volumes were printed and published together in 1838, and last two volumes were published together in mid-1839.
