The years from 1906 to the revolution of 1917 encompass the third phase of Bekhterev's scientific activity, and this period may be called psychoneurological and sociological. Extremely popular with students, liberal elements of the intelligentsia, and the democratic press, Bekhterev became an important public figure as well as an illustrious savant with an international reputation. In no other country has such a reputation counted higher in public esteem than in Russia. And so his prestige grew he was looked upon with increasing suspicion by conservative academic and governmental circles. This may have accounted for the fact that in 1913, after 35 years of Service, his faculty appointment at the Military Medical Academy was not renewed and he was retired as emeritus at the age of 56. "In 1835, Melloni was reluctant to accept the complete identity of heat and light (as suggested by Ampère, see below), arguing that light and radiant heat "proceed from two distinct causes". But in a footnote he added that "These two causes themselves are, perhaps, but different effects of a single cause".
