Philadelphia: E.C. Biddle, 1833. Very good. Hand-colored lithograph by Lehman & Duval after Charles Bird King (445 x 338 mm). Head-and-shoulders portrait of female Oto, wife of Chief Shaumonekusse, long black braids with hair parted at center, white and black beaded ear loops, four necklaces, silver bracelet, ruffled blouse or dress top, white and black fur or shawl loosely wrapped around her shoulders, one delicate hand showing. Very mild uniform age-toning (professionally washed). Original lithograph - NOT a reproduction! Hayne Hudjihini or Eagle of Delight (ca. 1804-1822) accompanied her husband to Washington, D.C. in 1821 and so delighted those she met that she was loaded down with presents and King painted several portraits of her. She was thought to be the most beautiful of all the Native American wives who visited Washington. Unfortunately, she died of measles shortly after her return home. A portrait of her hangs in the White House Library. When leaders of various tribes came to visit… Leer más

[New York], 1922. Good. Two typewritten speeches (15 pp. + 6 pp.), both measure 8.5" x 5.5" and both with manuscript corrections. Leaves toned and dust soiled, some wrinkling, paper-clip remnants and evidence of stapling. TWO TYPESCRIPT SPEECHES DOCUMENTING A METHODIST MINISTER'S EXPLORATIONS INTO THE HISTORY OF NATIVE AMERICANS IN THE NEW YORK REGION, AND DECRYING THE ACTIONS THAT LED TO THEIR DISAPPEARANCE. Ad 1: Typewritten draft of an inspiring address entitled "The Indians of New York City and Vicinity," delivered by W.R. Blackie at a 1922 meeting of the New York State Historical Society. In this oration, he discussed the history of Native Americans of New York City and the lower Hudson Valley, including tribes that may have predated the American Indians encountered by the first white settlers. The draft for this speech concludes mournfully: "The coming of the whites spelled the death knell of the Indian in this region. How numerous they were we may not know, butthat they were deprived of… Leer más

Philadelphia: E.C. Biddle, 1837. Very good. Hand-colored lithograph by Lehman & Duval after Charles Bird King (445 x 338 mm). Full-length standing portrait of male Sioux chief holding a rifle, wearing brightly colored blankets, feathered headdress, necklace of grizzly bear claws, and red leggings decorated with bird feathers. Very mild uniform age-toning (professionally washed, verso of upper left corner with Japanese tissue repair). Original lithograph - NOT a reproduction! Wa-Na-Ta (ca. 1795-1848) was an influential Sioux (Yanktona, on the Minnesota River) leader who fought against the Americans in the War of 1812, even leading a charge on Fort Sandusky, whence his nickname. For his exceptional heroism he was received at the English court and promoted to Captain. After the war, however, he sided with the U.S. In 1825, he signed the Treaties of Fort Pierre and Prairie du Chien, which established peace and territorial boundaries between the Sioux, Chippewas, Sac and Foxes, and Ioways. He was… Leer más

Seattle (et al.), 1925. 14 vols., large 4to., ca. 29 cm (tall) x 22 cm (wide) x 36 cm (linear), mostly in 3-hole side-stiched black leatherette covers, preserved in very good condition. Large and interesting literary archive of typescript stories and novels by "El Comancho," a popular author who specialized in stories of Native American lore and folktales, the American West and Western Expansion, the Pacific Northwest, Hunting and Fishing, and much more. Includes typescripts of "Three Boys in the Hills" and many stories published in "Outdoor Life," often with corrections and annotations (SEE FINDING AID BELOW). This appears to be the only substantial collection of "El Comancho" manuscripts in private hands. The archive, which is preserved in excellent condition, easily contains more than 3,000 typescript leaves. Some of the works appear to be unpublished. ¶ Walter Shelley Phillips (1867-1940), also known as "El Comancho," was a self-educated and self-trained naturalist, geologist, newspaper… Leer más

New York: Charles Wells, 1833. Hardcover. Very good. N.d. (ca. 1833). 16mo. [2], xiv, [3], 14-227, [4], 230-328, [1], iv-x pp. Contemporary beige calf elaborately gilt, a.e.g. Front free endpaper excised, binding with some minor refurbishment. Bound by Charles Well of New York (?) ¶ Charles Wells was described in New York City Directories as a bookbinder until at least 1832; thereafter he was listed as a bookseller; in 1838 he appears in the Directories as a publisher, and then in 1844 his trade is simply described as "books." There is a good possibility that the present binding came from his shop. Wells may have been the chief importer and user of English-made dies. Not in Edwin Wolf, "From Gothic Windows to Peacocks: American Embossed Leather Bindings, 1825-1855." * Early gift inscription from Ima Hitchcock to Emily Perkins, dated Dec. 25, 1856.

CONDITION ISSUES throughout: staining, browning, wrinkling, a few plates loose, some with tears. LARGE AND VERY EARLY NONCE NURSERYMAN'S SAMPLE BOOK CONTAINING 51 CHROMOLITHOGRAPHS AND STENCIL PLATES FOR THE USE OF TRAVELLING SEED PEDDLERS. Unfolded: 710 x 424 mm. Folded: 215 x 140 mm. Cloth with some soiling, outside edges of the four chromolithographs in the corners with evidence of biopredation (SEE IMAGES).
