Boston: Frederick T. Gray, 1827. First Edition. Poor. Large 8vo. [6], 491, [1] + "Proposals for publishing by Subscription the Works of George Washington" by Jared Sparks. Waterstains throughout, some of which are ugly (SEE IMAGES) but the paper is strong. Contemporary American sheep, dry and worn, upper joint cracked and just barely holding (SEE IMAGES). A complete copy albeit with significant faults, and priced accordingly. THIS MUNDANE VOLUME IS OF SIGNAL IMPORTANCE IN AMERICAN LITERATURE AS IT CONTAINS ONE OF ONLY TWO STRICTLY CONTEMPORARY ANNOUNCEMENTS OF THE PUBLICATION OF "TAMERLANE, BY A BOSTONIAN," BOTH OF WHICH WERE IGNORED. NO REVIEWS OF "TAMERLANE" WERE EVER WRITTEN, AND AS IS WELL KNOWN THE BOOK FELL INTO UTTER OBSCURITY. NONETHELESS, THESE WERE THE FIRST NOTICES OF EDGAR ALLAN POE AS A WRITER. The announcement in the present publication (Oct. 1827) was preceded by two months in the "United States Reviewe and Literary Gazette" (Aug. 1827). "Tammerlane [...] made practically no…

Belton and Dallas, TX: Hillyer Photographers, 1889. Good. Original photograph CDV (162 x 105 mm) on Hillyer stock (extremities worn, one small tear in photograph, for which see images). Interesting Texas photograph of a young woman; on the verso in an inscription (in extremely faint pencil) "Odna M. Chappell [?], age 15." It has been impossible for us to locate biographical information about this individual. Hillyer Studio was among the foremost cabinet card photographers in Texas during the late 19th-century. H.B. Hillyer (1835-1903) is credited with making some of the earliest photographs on paper in Texas. He moved from Austin to Dallas in 1887, branching out to Belton in 1889. "Hillyer's photographs won many awards at state fairs. For many years, as official photographer for the state of Texas" (SOURCE: TSA Handbook, online). Hillyer's CDV with both Belton and Dallas studios on the imprint are uncommon. From the Dorothy Sloan Collection of Women in the West.

Mendville, PA (etc.): Keystone View Company, 1934. Good. Sterograph (176 x 85 mm), on gray card mount identified as "Tex 45" and "No. 34163." Ink number "9" on upper right corner. Scarce stereograph view "Texas State College for Women" as it became known in 1934 (the name was changed to Texas Woman's University in 1957). The photo depicts the Administrative Building, which is now known as the Old Main Building. The manufacturer, Keystone View Company, was a major distributor of stereographic images, active from 1892 to 1963. The present item bears the Keystone number "TEX 45" suggesting that it formed part of a series of Texas stereoviews. Unlike many other contemporaneous Keystone products, the present item does not have any text on the verso. There is an actual photograph of this image held in the Keystone-Mast Collection at UC Riverside; other than that, we have found no other examples of it. Complete run of 12 issues (binder size: 315 x 230 mm), each profusely illustrated with photographs and preserved in original color-printed wrappers, stapled as issued, housed in original NRA-issued binder with working metal catches (SEE IMAGES): maroon cloth, upper cover embossed with depictions of rifles, American eagles, and the NRA logo, spine embossed with depiction of an early rifleman (upper joint splitting, some unobjectionable wear to contents, the binder and magazines leaning on outer bottom corners). 1968 IS A PIVOTAL YEAR IN UNITED STATES HISTORY, AS WELL AS THE HISTORY OF THE NATIONAL RIFLE ASSOCIATION; OFFERED HERE IS THE ENTIRE YEAR OF "AMERICAN RIFLEMAN." FURTHERMORE, THE MAY 1968 ISSUE FEATURES THE INFAMOUS "HAPPINESS IS A WARM GUN" ARTICLE WHICH INSPIRED JOHN LENNON TO WRITE ONE OF THE TRULY GREAT BEATLES' SONGS. Richmond, VA: Clemmitt & Jones, 1876. Broadside (48 x 31 cm). Abrasions to outer edges in places, overall very good. STRIKING 1875 POSTER ANNOUNCING A "HUMOROUS" LECTURE ON VIRGINIA NEGROES, DELIVERED BY A POPULAR ANTI-NORTHERNER AND FORMER SLAVE-OWNER, GEORGE WILLIAM BAGBY (1828-1883). The editors of "Representative Men of the South" (writing in 1880) state that: "[Bagby's] lecture on 'The Virginia Negro, Past and Present,' was prepared for the North, where he delivered it; but, the general subject being in that section considerably less popular in the lecture-hall than on the hustings, he failed sufficiently to interes his audience, and consequently soon laid the lecture aside. The truth is, the negro, although he once lent himself easily to the purposes of literary art, and no doubt will thus lend himself again, is just at present the subject of quite too little illusion, standing out as a naked fact, uncovered by so much as a shred of romance or a fig-leaf of picturesqueness. A better time…

Sicily, Naples and Turin, 1764. Very good. Together 6 items: 1 broadside (46 x 34.5 cm) + 5 bandi (folio sheets, each folded once, various sizes, various wear, some signatures clipped, others supplied in manuscript, assorted manuscript annotations, extracted from bindings). Small but very interesting collection of Bandi on the prohibition of tobacco, all scarce (none are found in OCLC / FirstSearch). As there was no centralized government in Italy, the restrictions on Tobacco was a quagmire of regional taxation, restriction, and monopolization, as is attested by the bandi in the present collection. Increasing tobacco consumption in the Italian penensula merited the establishment of fiscal laws by various States. The present items illustrate the expansion of tobacco culture, and the disjointed governmental responses from Sicily, Naples, and Turin: 1. Broadside: Carlo [...] La Regia Giunta eretta da S.M. per il Dritto proibitivo del Tabacco (3 May 1758). 2. Noi il Conte d' Americo Amari [...] del…

Good. Theatrical release movie poster (40.5" x 27"), printed in color, with a large illustration of a shirtless man gazing into a standing mirror in which he sees reflected a women wearing a bra and panties. Folded three times to create 6 panels (NB: this item must be shipped folded as such), short tears at folds, WRINKLED, but overall in good condition. GIGANTIC, SENSATIONAL 1972 TRANSGENDER MOVIE POSTER. THIS BOLD ILLUSTRATION DEPICTS THE MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL STRUGGLE OF A TRANS WOMAN AND IS ONE OF THE FINEST OF THAT ERA. While the film "I Want What I Want" was a commercial and critical failure, students and scholars of 60s and 70s transgener issues have recognized its significance. Starring Anne Heywood as Roy / Wendy, and directed by John Dexter, the film was cheaply made in England and released in in the UK and USA in 1972 (although our poster is copyright 1971 and was litho-printed in the USA). India, 19th or 20th century. Very good. Painting with extensive gold, applied on a partially printed leaf with some manuscript annotations (ca. 354 x 164 mm), mounted on card, matted (matte size: 460 x 278 mm). Each painting has a scratch to the surface area (SEE IMAGES), overall in very good condition. In these delicately rendered Indian processional paintings are depicted no less than 43 people, three elephants, four bulls, two carriages, and two horses. Alongside a waterfront, one party leaves from (while the other party returns to) a walled courtyard. The sky above appears to darken what is left of a fading sunset. Suitable for exhibition and study. We are grateful to Kelley Tuttle for her characteristically excellent cataloguing assistance.

Paris: Bertauts, 1850. First Edition. Very good. Lithograph (210 x 163 mm; 8.25" x 6.25") by Eugene LeRoux (1807-1863) after an original design by Karl Bodmer, one of which is on Chine applique, on large folio sheet (447 x 317 mm; 17.5" x 12.25"). Margins with foxing, images in excellent state. FIRST APPEARANCE OF THESE TWO RARE BODMER LITHOGRAPHS, ONE OF WHICH IS A PROOF IMPRESSION ON CHINE APPLIQUE. These images were NOT published in the well known "Voyage dans l'intérieur de l'Amérique du Nord pendant les années 1832-1834" series. Few examples of these lithographs survive in private ownership. The only auction record we have been able to locate is Ader, Paris, 15 Dec. 2020 (lot 63), being a bound album of 271 (!) lithographs -- all proof impressions on Chine, as here -- and of the same size as ours. That album was bound for Edouard Pierre, a Parisian papermaker located on the rue Vivienne, who specialized in creating proofs. It is possible that Pierre was in some way involved in creating the…
