Beautifully patterned green endpapers. This copy is inscribed by Haberly in the form of a poem, on the leaf before title page: "To Dorothy & Carroll, Our worst between us and the starry quest, Our Best Between us and jungle night, We are not ever wholly damned or blest. We are not ever wholly wrong or right: Divinity that makes poor dust so proud Is lightning leaping from a sombre cloud, Leaving the long gloom deeper for its light- affectionately, HAB." Written in fountain pen. Fine condition. Scarce thus.

From grouping of books owned by William Bell Scott. Though not signed by Scott, there is a four-page prospectus laid in for the book which has two holograph lines in Scott's and as well as two dates ("Legends of the Morrow, 1879, etc. ...1877 or 1878"). A perfectly fine copy. At time of writing, not copies of this scarce book on the market.

Original decorative cover stamped in red-brown and balck by the prominent Massachusetts illustrator, printmaker, sculptor and designer, Theodore Brown Hapgood. A very scarce title, certainly considering it was illustrated by Peter Newell, and with stunning cover design by Hapgood. No copies located on the Net at time of writing. Fine condition.

First Edition. 228pp. Original publisher's forest green decorative cloth with bold gilt central circular design bearing the author's monogram and a floral motif, spine gilt. This is the first edition of the author's first collection of poems, one of only 500 copies, with 31 illustrations (13 full-page, including frontispiece) by Thomas Hardy. Top edge gilt, others uncut. The covers are significantly blemished with water fading... however, priced accordingly, and quite a rare Hardy title, who considered himself primarily a poet. His poetry in "Wessex Poems" explores the themes of rural life, love and loss, the ravages of time, death and the inhuman ironies of war.

The scarcer first American edition, with frontis and ten plates, published in January, 1892, and censored some events in the British text. Some cover wear, loosened text block from hinge splitting.

Indianapolis: The Bobbs-Merrill Company, 1906. Original green cloth with cover and spine decorations by Margaret Armstrong. Printed on acidic, fragile paper. Vignette designs, a scarce Armstrong cover. Both inner hinges cracked and weakened, cover wear, good.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1893. First edition. First edition. Full reddish brown cloth with cunning cover illustration, lettering and design by Margaret Armstrong in black and silver. Unsigned, and appearing in Matthews', "Bookbindings, Old and New," 1895, with the caption, "Designed by Miss Armstrong," and Gullans and Espey, #181. The cover has a central half moon in silver, with the rest of the moon bearing silver lines and revealing the title, "Evening News," and a unique and striking manner. As well, Armstrong's has designed a wonderful all-over pattern of repeating snails, ducks, and rabbits in black. Spine gilt. Covers show some wear, but a very good copy of an exceedingly scarce and attractive Margaret Armstrong title. At the time of writing, no other copies located.

Original light green pictorial end papers, front hinge completely in tact, rear is cracked. With illustrations throughout by Frederick S. Church and James H. Moser. Laid in is an original autograph letter signed by Harris, with attending envelope, postmarked Feb. 19, '98. The letter (and envelope) is a addressed to Jules Hart, who was at that time the head of the Hebrew Orphan Asylum of New York, a Jewish orphanage founded in 1860, and closing offices in 1941. A fascinating bounty of manuscript with a provocative story are packed into this book concerning humorists Artemus Ward and Brett Harte, both icons of mid to late 19th Century American humor. Included in the assemblage by an unknown person, is a wonderful four-page to Brett Harte from Artemus Ward (mounted), describing in detail his feelings regarding his groundbreaking visit the the West Coast, newspaper biases, as well as Harte knocking on "death's door," with an unknown illness, possibly tuberculosis, which led to his death only a few years later. As well, the biography explains in detail the circumstances and goings on of his travels and performances, and even quotes parts of the letter, as well as eluding to Harte's complimentary article published in the newspaper, "The Era," for which Ward thanks him. As well, a long proof sheet (original) of that very article is attached opposite the half-title, with corrections by Brett Harte!… Leer más

A wonderful, expressive fine binding by Riviere & Son on a first edition of Hawthorne's most important work, in full crushed levant, the front cover bolding depicting the story's theme with a large scarlet morocco inlay of the letter ìAî, elaborately surrounded with gilt floral tools. The spine in 6 compartments, with 5 raised bands, gilt lettering in two compartments, top edge gilt. Binding signed in GILT STAMPñSIGNED PALLET BY RIVIERE & SON. Title page printed in red and black. The perfect expression of binding and title; a very attractive and well-preserved Riviere binding with expert front and rear hinge repair.

A stunning, fine copy with bright covers and untarnished gilt to spines, hinges entirely intact, and clean and tight internally with no foxing. Browning opposite a small rectangular remnant of former owner at front, very slight rubbing to extremities of spine, corners minimally bumped. One of the nicest copies one could hope to find of a Hawthorne classic, featuring early stories undertaken as hack-work and published in periodicals. Owner signature, dated1852. Housed in folding cloth chemise and matching quarter crimson morocco (gilt) cloth slipcase.

First Printing with only "Boston Stereotype Foundry" imprint on copyright page (versus "George C. Rand). A stunning copy, in fine condition with only very minor nick to top and bottom of spine, very slight bumping to corners; the cloth is bright and almost untarnished in any way with crisp embossed designs, hinges fully intact, the gilt on spine s unrubbed. Internally, clean and bright with no foxing. 8pp ads in front. A rare example indeed. Housed in chemise, with nice crimson quarter crushed morocco slipcase.

Extremely rare, the English first was issued almost concurrently with the first U.S. and copies are few and far between. At the time of this writing, no copies were located for sale on the internet. Cloth clean and bright, some wear to extremities and margins of spine, foxing present to first 4-5 pages owing to acidic paper, hinges cracked. With the bookplate of Lewis Kennedy Morse was an author who wrote "Melodies of English Verse." House in folding chemise and excellent morocco-backed slipcase.

One of 1690 copies, printed in April, 1851, with the original 3pp first state ads dated March, 1851in the front. "The House of Seven Gables," one of Hawthorne's most renowned works, was an extended description of houses and households from many of his sketches, and hearkening back to the household of his youth, and (per DAB), [the house] withdrawn, solitary, declining, haunted by an ancestral curse... With "The House of Seven Gables" Hawthorne said farewell to the Salem in which he had grown up." The scarce first issue with type battered on page 149; publisher's name gilt-stamped on spine (BAL binding A), ad catalogue dated March, 1851, and necessarily being bound between front endpapers.
