Longmans, Green. London. 1915.. pp. iv, 84. Occasional text figure. Extract in new paper wrappers, a very good copy. *Contains three contributions from HARRIS, plus others by HINDS HOWELL, TAYLOR & ARMOUR [Removal of Spinal Cord Tumour], FEARNSIDES, COLLIER a.o.

The coloured postcards show the following vessels : HMS Dreadnought Making a Record -:- HMS Dreadnought 'On Guard' in the North Sea -:- HMS Superb at Anchor -:- HMS Bellerophon on Gun Trial -:- HMS Invincible Coming Into Harbour -:- HMS Indomitable Home AGain. The photographs and cards are mounted onto thick card, all the photographs are fronted by a glassine title leaf, the text is on art paper, all bound within a full calf gilt case, all edges gilt, the binding with silk end-papers, signed by EYRE & SPOTTISWOODE. The leaves are now coming loose from the binding, the spine is wearing at the ends, despite which both joints are intact, the front board carries the gilt Royal coat of arms, the rear board has the gilt Admiralty device. *This clearly a special production for a high functionary probably naval - an ink inscription on the verso of the front free end-paper reads 'B.J. Griffin House. Toronto. 1972.. pp. 83, (i). Fully illustrated by photographs. Pictorial wrappers, front lower corner and rear top corner slightly creased, else a very good copy.

. Each illustration has a relevant verse below, initialled by Lupton. The botanical sketches by Barker are painted with some skill - the name of the artist is not recorded in BLUNT Art of Botanical Illustration. The Barker family of painters, of Bath, were portraitists and land scape painters and are probably not connected. W. Wright Barker [fl.1835-1850] was a London painter of flowers, portraits and genre scenes - his wife [fl.1834-1843] was a specialist painter of fruits and flowers - perhaps the bouquets in the album are by her ? But if the opening illustration of an ivy garland is contemporary with the inscription of 1849, this would seem to rule her out ! The Prefatory verse is dated 1838, the last dated verse is for July 1852 [page 149], but the last page and verse in the book is dated 1849 [page 151]. The poems are not consistently chronological - the earliest date is for a verse of 1803, placed at page 107. Frontispiece and 2 plates are chromolithographs, 1 plate is an etching in sepia, 9 plates of military costumes are lithographed with added colour, 431 text and full-plate wood engravings, 21 maps and plans. Contemporary half-morocco and marbled boards [English binding], occasional scattered foxing, a very nice copy.

Original boards, some text highlighting, else a very good copy. *The results of a symposium on the Nares Strait and its tectonics - introduced by two papers - 'History of Exploration and Geology in the Nares Strait region' and 'History and implications of the Nares Strait conflict'. The frontispiece gives portraits of NARES, FEILDEN, TAYLOR and WEGENER. The latter '... through his widely publicised writings on continental drift, focused attention on Nares Strait as a horizontal large-scale dislocation along which Greenland had drifted past Ellesmere Island, such that in geological discussion, Nares Strait has become synonymous with the ' Wegener Fault '. '

Photographic portrait of Alfred to front title by JOHNSTONE, O'SHANNESSY & CO., MELBOURNE, facsimile signature below, wood-engraved title with vignette, three leaves on thin, purple paper at the end bearing Advertisements for Melbourne commercial suppliers including the photographers - Johnstone, O'Shannessy. Original blue cloth gilt over bevelled boards, all edges gilt, the covers now faded and dull with old water-marks, the damp-staining has also affected the upper and lower margins of the first three leaves and this can be very faintly seen in some of the lower margins later in the book. *Very scarce - COPAC locates copies at the British Library and Oxford only. Knight also wrote - A Few Particulars Supplementary to the Catalogue of the Products of the Colony of Victoria, Australia. - L, 1862 - 8vo, With full-page maps on pp. 1-2. It is a supplement to the official Victorian catalogue for the London International Exhibition of 1862

Original boards uncut, an early paper reback now beginning to split at the front, the stitching weak with several gatherings coming free, with ink inscription at the head of the title - ' Jas Gibson Esqre. with the donor's [ presumably the author ] respectful compts. Sept./14. ', a couple of ink corrections in the same hand and some later pencil marginalia, the map is provided in FACSIMILE from the British Library copy. *VERY SCARCE - COPAC lists 2 copies - British Library [with map] and University College London [map not mentioned]. The British Library Historical Publications also offer a facsimile of the book though having ordered a copy recently, I can confirm that it comes without a map. J. Debrett. London. 1795. 4to. First edition.. pp. xxiv, 278, (xxv) Appendix, (i) Advertisement [wanting half-title]. Contemporary tree calf, rebacked, wide margins, neat two word 'Library' stamp on title, a very good copy. *Prior to rebacking, the binding was tight and no indication of the half-title having been removed. The copy in the Fitzwilliam, Cambridge, is also wanting the half title though the copy in Manchester is described as having it. It was the habit of some binders to discard the half-title, as in this copy.
