London: Printed [by Thomas Davison] for G. B. Whittaker, 1824. 204 x 126 mm. (8 x 5"). Three volumes.. Publisher's drab paper boards, paper title label on spines, edges untrimmed. Front pastedown with the bookplate of H. Bradley Martin; pencilled note on front flyleaf identifying this as the Bellew copy (see below for both). ◆Boards with a scattering of small faint spots, negligible rubbing to joints, spine ends bumped (as always), trivial thin worm trail at inner margin of one quire, but AN EXCEPTIONALLY FINE COPY, the insubstantial bindings with nothing approaching a significant imperfection, and the text clean, fresh, and bright, and with generous margins. This Victorian "three-decker" was issued at a time when publisher's temporary boards, intended to be replaced by a binding of the buyer's choosing, were giving way to publisher's cloth bindings that were "library-ready." With content that is reflected in the work's title, "Ramses" is one of two "exotic" novels by bookseller and orientalist… Leer más

Printer's device on title page. Front pastedown with bookplate of the Fox Pointe Collection; rear pastedown with deaccession stamp of Bradford City Libraries. STC 19736; ESTC 19736. ◆Spine just faintly sunned, leaves lightly browned (due to paper quality) and trimmed a bit close at head, grazing headline on a couple of leaves, isolated marginal stains or tiny rust spots, but an excellent copy, fresh and clean, in a sympathetic binding with few signs of wear. This was an important work in establishing distinctions in liturgy and doctrine between the Catholic Church and the Church of England, written by a moderate puritan whom DNB considers "perhaps the most significant English theologian of his age." This is an infrequently seen polemical treatise from the English Reformation addressing theological arguments over Purgatory and transubstantiation, one of 21 such works Fulke (1528-89) produced to refute Roman Catholic attacks on the doctrines of the Church of England. Front pastedown with book label of Charles Whibley. Macdonald 16a ii; Wing D-2342; Pforzheimer 337. ◆Spine with a thin, two-inch piece missing and with minor wear at the top, a couple of small stains, but a perfectly serviceable binding nonetheless; text with light overall browning, one leaf with a chip at top margin touching the running title, but a very good copy internally, with no major condition issues. Written in response to an English translation of a controversial work of biblical criticism ("Histoire critique du vieux testament"), this poem in support of Anglicanism is considered one of Dryden's most important writings on his own religious philosophy. VERY HANDSOME MAROON CRUSHED MOROCCO BY ZAEHNSDORF (signed on front turn-in and stamped on rear pastedown), covers with center panel of blind-stamped palmettes and festoons in staggered rows, gilt foliate sprays at convergence points, raised bands, spine compartments with blind-stamped palmette centerpiece and gilt leaf sprigs at corners, maroon silk endpapers, top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed. Woodcut vine border by C. S. Ricketts on first text page. Van Capelleveen A 73a; Tomkinson, p.170. ◆Lower corners a little dented, light foxing resembling a fine spray in many lower margins, occasionally spreading upwards, (probably resulting from the printing process), but certainly a fresh copy in a lustrous binding with only minor signs of use. Howes D-151. ◆Spine darkened and with a small rubbed patch, covers a little soiled and discolored, minor rubbing to extremities, but the binding solid, and quite an excellent, clean copy internally, with only the most trivial imperfections. This is quite a scarce account of an Englishman's service in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Captain Francis Dawson (1840-89) was born in London as Austin John Reeks.
