Unique artist's book, hand-written and hand-painted by the artist / author, Barry McCallion on cream Rives BFK a Barry McCallion continues his exploration of the narrative of his created world (or is it his observations of this world?) through chance word and particular image. His creation of the Oarsman - a sailor / traveler who rows (backward of course) towards his mythical destination - is intriguing. His voyages may be autobiographical or completely haphazard. He hoists his sails or locks his oars and is off - and we follow, observing from the sidelines, to places we otherwise would not go.

Camden, N.J.: Victor Talking Machine, 1916. Original shellac recording made February 3, 1916, labeled as "rural comedy" on the label of the record (not so funny if you were a woman!), with Old Country Fiddler at the Party on the second side, record housed in original brown paper envelope, printed on both sides, labeled Victor Record, and listing the artists that the company produced, record housed in black cloth over boards protective clamshell box, leather label stamped in gilt with title and artist on spine. This monologue was probably amusing in its day, describing the excitement in Pineville, VT, about the possibility of woman suffrage, and the founding of the Pineville Women's Rights and General Improvement League. The narrator opines that there is nothing wrong with women voting providing they do it quietly, commenting further the law will never pass as everyone in Vermont was a Republican and the Republican would never approve such a law. New York: Vincent FitzGerald & Company, 1989. One of 50 copies only, each on Rives Johannot and Dieu Donne handmade paper, signed by both Partovi and Senneby on the colophon. Page size: 6 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches. Illustrated by the noted Swedish sculptor, Annette Senneby, with a continuous etched line that extends across the box housing the book, across the covers and endpapers and on each page of text, in white on the mottled endpapers lining the box and the endpapers of the book, in charcoal gray on the white text. The line crosses the pages in various directions - now going diagonally up, now down. The strong etched line can be seen through the pages forming a ghostly pattern on the viewed page. This mirrors Rumi's parable of the painting contest between the ancient Greeks and Chinese. The text is repeated in Persian calligraphy after the English text, divided by a rust-colored paper insert, but the etched line continues. Original photograph, 5-3/4 x 4-3/8 inches, mounted on grey board, 8 x 12 inches, within triple rules, some sunning to top inch of board on which photo is mounted, lacking tissue guard was was previously affixed, photograph is fine. This is a handsome image of the pianist and composer, seated on a rocker on a proch most likely in the country, reading a book. The tree outside the porch and the light colored and light-weight dress indicates summer. Amy Beach (1867-1944), composer and pianist , showed her musical precocity early on; by four, she was composing waltzes. her mother, a talented singer and pianist, undertook her daughter's first musical education; later she studied Ernst Perebo, Junius W. Monahan / in appreciation of his help / fullness. / Cordially / Helen Keller." Size of photograph: 8 inches x 10 inches; matted and framed to overall size of 13 inches x 14 inches; photograph a bit rumpled at corners with some spotting. Still a lovely image of Miss Keller at age 59 seated on large chair with "Go-Go" seated at her feet, one of her hands on his collar and the other across his back. She is smiling and beautifully dressed in suit with fur shawl and hat with large cameo pin at her throat. "Go-go" is almost smiling as well - turned to face the camera with his gentle eyes seeing what his owner cannot.
