New York: Hermitage House. Near Fine in Very Good+ dj. 1954. 2nd printing. Hardcover. NOISBN . [minimal wear to book, slight age-toning to edges of text block; jacket lightly soiled, with a few tiny nicks at spine ends, one tiny closed tear at bottom of rear panel]. (line drawings in text) Comic novel "about the funny side of parental guidance and the serious side of son-parent attachment" Set mostly at a fictional prep school, "Fairfield School for Boys," in Riverdale, New York, it follows the school career of one Addison Beech, whose father, frankly, sounds like a prototypical helicopter parent, long before the term was invented: he coaches his son for his first interview with the school's headmaster, meddles in his business throughout the book, and even writes his Graduation Night speech for him. "If Fairfield School is Addison's alma mater, Mr. Beech is certainly his alma pater." Jacket blurbs by Edward Streeter and P.G. Wodehouse, of all…

New York: David McKay Company, Inc.. Near Fine in Near Fine dj. (c.1968). First Edition. Hardcover. NOISBN . [nice clean copy, minor wear to base of spine; jacket slightly age-toned at spine, no other significant wear]. Novel about "the twenty-four hours in the life of a young man just before he goes into military service," even though he's passionately against war and does intend to do any killing: "he wants only to look in the face of the man who will try to kill him, and love that man if he can." Basis for the 1970 film of the same name, directed by David Miller and starring a young Michael Douglas in his first starring role, with Arthur Kennedy and Teresa Wright as his uncomprehending and unsympathetic parents. .

Garden City NY: Doubleday, Doran & Company, Inc.. Very Good. 1931. 1st (U.S.) edition. Hardcover. (no dust jacket) [quite a decent copy, with light fraying to cloth at bottom corners, various scratches and abrasions to spine; front hinge weak but not split]. A psychological suspense novel, of sorts, about a man who accidentally kills his enemy, then spends the next twenty years or so fretting about: (a) getting away with "murder"; and (b) whether it actually was murder, since he didn't mean to do it -- at least not consciously. The narrative is divided into two sections: "London, 1910" and "London, 1930." The author was known for writing "metaphysical thrillers" with occasional supernatural elements. The American edition of this book seems to be considerably more uncommon than the true (British) first edition, published the previous year. .

New York: Exposition Press (A Banner Book). Very Good+ in Very Good dj. (c.1955). First Edition. Hardcover. [bumped and slightly cracked at bottom corner of front cover, one-time owner's ink signature on ffep, otherwise tight and clean with no significant wear; jacket lightly edgeworn, small tear at top right-hand corner of front panel, small horizontal scrape on spine]. "The real, unvarnished facts, the revealing story about hair, presented authentically in a humorous autobiography [in which] facts are blended with fancy" -- one of the "fancies," perhaps, being the author's bona fides as a "cinema, radio and TV writer," given that any credits he may have achieved in this line of work seem to have completely eluded all the standard reference sources. The rear-jacket blurb (presented in the form of two jokey and clearly fake newspaper articles) calls him a "notorious radio and TV writer [with] a long record having served time in the San Francisco…

New York: The Macmillan Company. Very Good+ in Good dj. 1941. First Edition. Hardcover. (price-clipped?) [minimal shelfwear to book, some dust-darkening to top of text block; jacket front flap clipped rather weirdly (although the printed price is still present), a few small chips along top edge and at spine extremities (about 3/4-inch torn away at top of spine, impacting most of the author's name thereupon), light soiling and general wear]. "This picaresque tale of adventure is unusual in its theme -- that the American Revolution was won in Europe -- and in following a part of history hitherto neglected in fiction, the roles played by Benjamin Franklin, the Lees of Virginia, Beaumarchais, and the British Secret Service." .

New York: Horace Liveright, Inc.. Fine in Very Good+ dj. 1931. 3rd printing. Hardcover. (price-clipped) [very nice copy, no significant wear to book; jacket shows just a bit of wear to spine extremities]. The only novel by the then-ex-wife of Sinclair Lewis (they had divorced in 1925 and he had already remarried, to journalist Dorothy Thompson), this book doesn't try very hard (or at all) to put up any kind of a "fictionalized" screen -- the jacket blurb states: "This story of what it means to be a famous author's wife, told by a famous author's former wife, throws a floodlight upon the jangled marriages of today." OK, she at least changes the names -- the husband here is "Timothy Hale" -- but the autobiographical nakedness shines through from the first page, on which we meet the protagonist, who's working as an editor at a magazine called "Fashion." (In real life, Ms. Hegger was an editor at "Vogue.") She got another…

Sauk City WI: Arkham House. Very Good+ in Near Fine dj. 1978. First Edition. Hardcover. [a touch of wear at the base of the spine, one-time owner's name plus date & place of purchase written in ink along edge of rear pastedown (concealed beneath rear jacket flap), small check-marks next to all titles in table of contents; the jacket is very nice, showing just the tinest bit of soiling and some minor wrinkling at the top of the front panel (which for some reason shows up more in the scanned image than to the eye)]. A collection of the author's "finest spectral fiction written over a period of thirty-five years," including her legendary tale "The Three Marked Pennies," which originally appeared in the August 1934 issue of Weird Tales. (The "thirty-five years" claim is a little specious, though: in fact, all but one of these stories was published between 1934 and 1950, and all first appeared in Weird Tales.) The volume also contains: "The…

New York: Summit Books. Very Good+ in Near Fine dj. (c.1981). 4th printing. Hardcover. [minimal shelfwear, thin black marker line (remainder mark) on bottom edge of text block; the jacket has just a bit of faint soiling to the front panel and some light surface wear (essentially invisible inside its mylar covering)]. (B&W photographs) INSCRIBED ("With all my love to my favorite hockey fan") and SIGNED by the author (just "Dave") on the front endpaper. Memoir by the famous hockey "enforcer" -- basically a guy whose primary job on the ice was to get into fights -- who played most notably for the Philadelphia Flyers (from 1971 to 1976), and to this day holds the all-time NHL record for most penalty minutes in a single season (472). He had been retired as an active player for about a year when this book was published, but went on to coach a number of minor-league teams. In 1982 he famously published an op-ed piece in the sports section of The New York Times…

(8 B&W film stills) Photoplay Edition, issued to coincide with the release of the 1928 Fox Film Corporation film, one of the last silent features directed by John Ford (although both Wikipedia and IMDb have the weird idea that he was "uncredited" on the film, a non-fact so easily disproven as to be laughable). With its Irish setting, it was right in Ford's comfort zone (although biographers and critics have noted its brooding "Murnau-esque" visual style), with Victor McLaglen starring as a wanted IRA man who returns secretly to Ireland with the intention of killing…

Goodlettsville TN: Published By the Author. Near Fine. (ca.1995; c.1967). Second Edition [see notes]. Softcover. [light handling wear only, a touch of residue on inside front cover, apparently from a removed bookplate]. (B&W photographs) A self-published memoir of country legend Hank Williams, by a member of his original band, the Drifting Cowboys. (Rivers was the fiddle player, and joined the group in 1949.) It's not very well-written, but is still valuable for its up-close-and-personal perspective. Rivers created the "Second Edition" of the book (originally published in 1967, as he explains in his Foreword) by adding a "Special Section," inside which the original edition is sort of sandwiched. (Pages 1-8 consist of new material, pages 9-48 are the original book, and the remainder of the book (through page 56) contains more new material, including a page on Hank Williams Jr., an account of the later career of the Drifting Cowboys, who got back together and…
