[nice clean copy, minor wear to base of spine; jacket slightly age-toned at spine, no other significant wear]. Novel about "the twenty-four hours in the life of a young man just before he goes into military service," even though he's passionately against war and does intend to do any killing: "he wants only to look in the face of the man who will try to kill him, and love that man if he can." Basis for the 1970 film of the same name, directed by David Miller and starring a young Michael Douglas in his first starring role, with Arthur Kennedy and Teresa Wright as his uncomprehending and unsympathetic parents. .

Garden City NY: Doubleday, Doran & Company, Inc.. Very Good. 1931. 1st (U.S.) edition. Hardcover. (no dust jacket) [quite a decent copy, with light fraying to cloth at bottom corners, various scratches and abrasions to spine; front hinge weak but not split]. A psychological suspense novel, of sorts, about a man who accidentally kills his enemy, then spends the next twenty years or so fretting about: (a) getting away with "murder"; and (b) whether it actually was murder, since he didn't mean to do it -- at least not consciously. The narrative is divided into two sections: "London, 1910" and "London, 1930." The author was known for writing "metaphysical thrillers" with occasional supernatural elements. The American edition of this book seems to be considerably more uncommon than the true (British) first edition, published the previous year. .

"This picaresque tale of adventure is unusual in its theme -- that the American Revolution was won in Europe -- and in following a part of history hitherto neglected in fiction, the roles played by Benjamin Franklin, the Lees of Virginia, Beaumarchais, and the British Secret Service." .

The only novel by the then-ex-wife of Sinclair Lewis (they had divorced in 1925 and he had already remarried, to journalist Dorothy Thompson), this book doesn't try very hard (or at all) to put up any kind of a "fictionalized" screen -- the jacket blurb states: "This story of what it means to be a famous author's wife, told by a famous author's former wife, throws a floodlight upon the jangled marriages of today." OK, she at least changes the names -- the husband here is "Timothy Hale" -- but the autobiographical nakedness shines through from the first page, on which we meet the protagonist, who's working as an editor at a magazine called "Fashion." A partly autobiographical novel by this Birmingham-born author and artist (1889-1961), who painted murals for churches and theatres as a young man, and later worked in other forms of decorative art. It's not very well-written, but is still valuable for its up-close-and-personal perspective.
