Gentle social satire about the upward rise of Jacob Hiram Bates, who gets his entrepreneurial start in a small Vermont village as a seller of patent medicine for dogs (Bates Animal Elixir), and eventually winds up "as purveyor of expensive cosmetics to the socially elite, and the possessor of a glittering chateau on Long Island." (no dust jacket) [a reading/reference copy only, heavily worn, front hinge cracked, boards exposed at bottom corners, missing ffep, need I go on?]. Novel about "a Jewess born in the slums of a Levantine seaport [who] becomes a courtesan, selling her favors in the shabby cabarets of Eastern ports." The book was filmed under the title A DAUGHTER OF ISRAEL in 1928, a late silent starring Betty Blythe, of which the New York Times opined that "the most interesting point about it is that it was filmed in the countries of its backgrounds, which include Turkey, Egypt, Palestine and France." Regardless of that, it seems to have been a pretty dull affair: "It was made some three or four years ago, but it looks even older." (And in 1928, that was pretty damning criticism.) (B&W photographs) Tribute book for the AFI's second annual award, the first presented to an actor. Includes two short articles, "The Unforgettable Young Man" by Joan Blondell, and "James Cagney: A Few Thoughts on the Next 2 Billion Years" by Ray Bradbury; plus numerous comments from Cagney's professional colleagues and friends. At that time he had been retired from the screen for 13 years, but was subsequently lured back for two appearances, notably in Milos Forman's RAGTIME (1981) and much less notably in the dreadful 1984 TV-movie TERRIBLE JOE MORAN. .

[slight bumping to several corners, tiny stain on bottom of text block, one-time owner's signature on top of front pastedown; jacket is quite nice, with just a bit of wear at the spine ends]. A weirdly "lost" novel about "a real American girl -- her magnificent day-dreams, her jealous boyfriends, her strange enthusiasms, her searing disappointments, her tolerant but puzzled parents." Let me explain the "lost" business. A movie called JANIE was released by Warner Bros. in 1944; it starred Joyce Reynolds, then a 19-year-old ingenue whose career subsequently went nowhere (although, to be fair, she retired from the screen not long after this film, to marry a Marine), Robert Hutton (who at least had a career, albeit in a long string of mostly forgettable movies), and a stellar supporting cast that included Edward Arnold, Ann Harding, Robert Benchley, and Hattie McDaniel.… Leer más

[slight discoloration to covers, short diagonal bend at lower right corner of front cover (also affecting first couple of pages), tiny tear in bottom edge of front cover; one-time owner's signature on ffep]. (frontispiece photo of stage setting) Comedy about a snooty drama critic who is brought down to earth and taught the facts of life by a free-spirited playwright (somewhat modeled after William Saroyan, at least in the opinion of Brooks Atkinson in the NY Times). The original 1942 Broadway production starred Alexander Knox and Nicholas Conte (who changed his name to Richard Conte when he became a full-time movie actor after World War II), and ran for a respectable 125 performances. .

Garden City NY: Doubleday & Company, Inc.. Fine in Near Fine dj. 1974. Early printing. Hardcover. [a very nice copy, no discernible wear to the book at all; the jacket shows just a little wear at the spine ends, with an itsy-bitsy tear at the crown, but most importantly the spine shows none of the fading that's so typical with this book, with the title still bright red]. BUM-bump-BUM-bump-BUM-bump-BUM-bump....chomp! The novel that spawned the movie that ruined the beach-going experience for thousands of people. This is about as nice a copy as you could hope to find -- eminently gift-worthy, if that's what you 've got in mind. Although not a first printing (it lacks the "First Edition" statement on the copyright page and has no gutter code on page 311), in all other respects it's identical to the first (and the unclipped jacket is exactly the same as the first, including the $6.95 printed price on the front flap).
