Dated from imprint circa 1855, 235 x 165 mm, 9¼ x 6½ inches, pink card covers with illustration of Aunt Mavor showing 5 children a list of fairytale titles, adverts to lower cover. 8 very good large hand coloured illustrations, just over half page, small print prose text beneath. The first illustration shows the legs of the giant, 2 cows dangling from his left hand. Spine expertly repaired from inside, restitched, lower margins trimmed close, no loss, last line trimmed off 2 pages by original binder but restored neatly by him, so there is no loss of text. Enchanting coloured frontispiece of 3 children watching baby in his cradle. At top of frontispiece is a small coloured illustration of jackdaw feeding her babies in the nest. Black and white title page with illustration of baby in birds' nest. 11 other delightful colour plates about a baby boy who becomes a mischievous toddler, each with a small coloured picture at the top chronicling the life of the baby jackdaws. All coloured plates face text with vignettes of the baby jackdaws. Covers slightly dusty, spine slightly darkened, onlaid plate faintly spotted, minute graze to background of 1 colour plates and facing black and white, caused by adhesion (see image 5 ), 10 mm (½") closed tear to 2 margins, repaired. Text and plates printed 1 side only. A sweet fairy tale about a generous kind old man and a selfish mean old lady. Spine darkened, cloth lightly marked on lower cover, page edges very slightly darkened, inner joints cracked, binding sound and firm, no inscriptions. A very good copy of an uncommon Dumpy book. This celebrated Japanese artist was born in Japan in 1869, moved to San Francisco in 1894 and settled in Chelsea at the turn of the century, developing a great fondness for London.
