Uncommon signed.  As the subtitle suggests, it explores the history of the Gaia idea--that the Earth is a living, self-regulating organism--put forth by James Lovelock and Lynn Margulis (the book is dedicated to them and "to everyone who gives them a good argument"). As Publishers Weekly reports, in the book "the twists and turns of Gaian politics are deftly unraveled" and it "explores how the Gaian outlook has influenced feminism, goddess art, neopaganism, and Green Party ecopolitics." Joseph is a science journalist who has written for many national magazines. A very good or better book with light edge wear to boards (one bump to top board) and some sporadic dogeared pages; the binding crackles a little as the cover opens. In a very good jacket with wear to spine ends and some creasing to top edges, with a Barnes & Noble bookstore sticker on rear panel at upper left .

MacMillan Company, New York, 1906. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Inscribed in a handsome cursive on the title page: "For M. E. Hansell, Mabel Osgood Wright, Fairfield, Conn." Writing under a pseudonym in this treatise on gardening, Wright was a pioneering author on the environment and an early leader in the Audubon movement, serving a director from 1905 to 1928. She is perhaps best known for "Birdcraft," an early bird guide (1895). Gray cloth with gilt lettering and a red vine patterning (for this book about gardens). Very good plus with bumping to corners and some foxing to page edges, but the interior clean and tight; fading to red vines on the spine. The event was followed by a discussion with Robert Hass. Printed in red and black ink on heavy poster stock with a portrait of Snyder on the right side. Near fine with a little toning/ghosting to top portion. Inscribed to "Cris" by editor and contributor Joyce Carol Thomas, as well as inscribed (each time "to Cris") by five of the contributors--Al Young, Gary Soto, Gerald Haslam, Maxine Hong Kingston, and Rick Wernli--at the head of their stories, all on the same occasion in the year of publication. It represents a surprisingly great gathering of twentieth-century California writers (only Wernli faded to obscurity, and apparently his contribution here, "Colony," was his first published story). A non-authorial (it would seem) gift inscription to Cris from "Ellen" is found on the upper right of the FFEP. Other contributors to this anthology include Gerald Vizenor, Lois Lowry, Ana Castillo, and Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston. A very near fine book, with just one bump to lower edge of front board, otherwise crisp and clean; in a near fine jacket with a streak of rubbing on the rear panel where cloth to turns to paper underneath. Apparently a scarce book, with (it would appear) no other copies available online, though it was re-released by Trinity University Press in paperback in 2013, suggesting its continued relevance. Owner signature in faint pencil on the pastedown across it. A good book with sunning to upper edges of green cloth boards. Wear to all corners with boards peeking through. Half-inch tear to cloth of spine tail. Toning to endpapers, pastedowns, and text block faces. A few spots to cloth, one larger half-inch blot to rear board. Pages are clean and white. Jacket is very good and presents well with wear to corners and spine ends. A flawed copy, but solid, and rare.

No Binding. Near Fine. San Francisco, self-published, 1965. A scarce 11 x 8.5 inch flier, reproducing Whalen's calligraphy, that advocates the celebration of "Gentle Thursday" on March 25, 1965. "Nobody listening to You? Stop yakking," the flier begins. See the photo for the other calls to action (non-action, that is). A message as timely now as ever. Near fine with a slim band of toning/sunning at upper edge, one spot near lower left corner, and a gentle crease across its middle were it was once folded. Please inquire for photos. Ehrlich's first book, a volume of poems published in her hometown of Santa Barbara when she was just 24. At this point, she had had only a single poem published in the California Review, with no other credits. She'd find great acclaim thanks to her third book and first book of prose, The Solace of Open Space. A beautiful production in brown wrappers with brown endpapers, cover illustration by Judy Daniel, lettering in shades of blue and purple. Printed by Noel Young. One of 550 copies, with an additional 50 copies in cloth. Great association between these West Coast poets. Fine book, but rear board seems slightly longer that the front board (printer's error). In near fine jacket that is just a tad offset.

Association copy, with an autographed note laid in from the City Lights publishing to Jack Shoemaker, McClure's friend and sometimes editor-publisher. Shoemaker is a legend in the independent press world who has stuck with the Beats (in particular, Gary Snyder) from start to finish. As the editor of Sand Dollar Books, Shoemaker published McClure's The Book of Joanna and Hail Thee Who Play. As editor of North Point Press, he published McClure's widely read memoir Scratching the Beat Surface. The letter reads, in part, "Dear Jack, Hope this finds you well, and makes you glad! Of course, we have you to thank for this edition ." The signature is a little hard to parse, but might be "Dani"? On official City Lights stationary. A cool item. The book is fine, the letter very near fine with a hint of handling. ALS.

Jane Cottrell rose to become the Forest Service's Deputy Chief, an office which sits just below the agency's Chief and Associate Chief  (i.e. third in command). Char Miller is an environmental historian, a professor at Pomona College, and the author of more than a dozen environmental book on subjects as diverse as Death Valley, Hetch Hetchy, water policy and controversy, and a lot more. He is a fellow of the Forest History Society. A nice association in light of the subject, and a book described as a "masterful biography," the first of Pinchot in four decades. Blurbs by Jack Ward Thomas (former Forest Service Chief) and Carolyn Merchant. A fine book in fine jacket, as new.

Charlie Glemore Hughes, Jr. was the editor of the Kentucky Literary Newsletter and the self-described "owner, publisher, and janitor" of Wind Publications. Fine, a tight book that feels unread but surely was treasured. First paperback edition.

Kansas City: Sheed Andrews & McMeel, 1977. First edition. Hardcover. Near fine/Very good. Inscribed on the title page: "For Lee, who has met coyote. --Barry." An uncommonly on point inscription considering the book is Lopez's telling of North American indigenous Trickster Coyote mythologies based on his extensive research (presented in a bibliographic essay at the rear). His second book. Most of the stories are just two to three pages, and Lopez notes in his introduction that he's taken the license of "rewriting, translating, and adapting" these tales to eschew the stiff language of translation and to make them more accessible to a modern audience. A near fine book in blue cloth with just a touch of sunning to edges; in a very good or better jacket with light wear to corners and spine ends.

Uncommon signed. Dubos (1901-1982) was a microbiologist and important environmental thinker. He won the Pulitzer in 1969 for So Human an Animal and is credited with coining the essential enviro phrase, "Think globally, act locally." As the jacket describes this book, "If we continued to make choices for our future only relation to negative issues such as pollution and overpopulation, says Dr. Dubos, our civilization will become increasingly dreary and meaningless. Instead, we must learn to cultivate the positive values that exist in man's nature and in the external world." Mount Angel is a Benedictine Abbey founded in 1882 in Oregon, north of Salem.
