An association copy: not signed, but Louis Untermeyer's copy with a letter to him from Moore in its original envelope tipped in on the front pastedown. Also tipped in on the front free endpaper is a clipping of the original review of the book by Karl Shapiro in the New York Times Book Review with Untermeyer's notation at the top. The letter is on stationary with her Brooklyn address; it's written with a poet's flair, but seems to be about the possibility of a children's book about reindeer for Collier Books. She finishes,"Your equipoise and generosity are an example to me -- (am myself besieged by unnecessary mail!)." Signed and with two hand corrections to the letter. Marianne Moore is one of our most important modernist poets (known, also, for her writing about animals), and she was a nominee for the Nobel Prize in Literature. With Larry McMurtry's bookplate on front pastedown, and an inscription on the illustrated front end free paper: "To the Governor, from the Big Red E Tribe." Curious: The Big Red E Tribe doesn t come up on a quick search, but could this book have been inscribed to a governor of Oklahoma? Hard to put it past McMurtry's collecting interests. Originally published in the American Guide Series in 1941, this is the first printing of the revised edition. A very good book with some wear to corners and to the edges of lower boards. In a very good jacket with wear around spine, some foxing on rear panel, and a few stray red pen marks to front. Love that the cover highlights a double-decker overpass. Please inquire for photos.

With a word of introduction by Stephen Mather, the then-Director of the National Park Service. Albright would go on to assume that position, and he wrote this book as the first superintendent of Yellowstone National Park. A playful account via essays of the history and personas of the National Park Service from its early days. Frank J. Inscribed on the half-title page in the year of publication: "For Marc -- Best of luck and wishes -- Best, Rick Bass, Oxford '89."  Uncommon for also being inscribed by the book's dedicatee and illustrator, Bass's then-wife, with a separate pen: "For Marc, Best wishes, Elizabeth Hughes, Oxford, 1989." As of this writing there are no other copies signed by Hughes available, and it's an especially nice inclusion as this book is dedicated "To Elizabeth" and she is substantially a character in the book (for an example, see photo of page 3). This is Bass's fourth book; written in the style of a journal, it lyrically shares his expertise as an oil geologist and is simultaneously a "subterranean exploration of the self." With an opening epigraph from Peter Matthiessen's The Snow Leopard, and blurbs by Thomas McGuane, Annie Dillard, and Jim Harrison. A fine book in a near fine jacket with very subtle sunning to the spine. .

Near fine because of the usual creasing along the edges of the wraps where it overhangs the page block and one faint crease to lower right front cover. Residue square of a sticker on the upper left corner of the inside cover. One faint stain on rear wrap along the spine, hardly noticeable, otherwise the outer covers are entirely clean. The pages are immaculate.
