The late William Kittredge was one of the foremost writers of the West and a longtime professor at the University of Montana. Part of Milkweed's wonderful Creedo series. With pages of black and white family photos, and an afterword portrait by the ecocritic Scott Slovic.

Hornaday is well-recognized as a pivotal early champion of wildlife conservation as the first director of the Bronx Zoo and president of the American Bison Society, dedicated to protecting bison in the West. Plotkin is a well respected ethnobotanist who has held leadership positions at the World Wildlife Fund, the Botanical Museum of Harvard, and Conservation International. A standout association between fellow National Book Award winners: Eleanor Clark, whose husband was Robert Penn Warren, won in 1965 for the nonfiction book The Oysters of Locmariaquer. Matthiessen's At Play in the Fields of the Lord was a finalist for an NBA the following year, but he did not win until the Snow Leopard in 1979, and then Shadow Country in 2008. Matthiessen and Clark both wrote evocatively about the sea and its catch, and Clark wrote an advanced blurb for Far Tortuga that appears on its jacket: "Peter Matthiessen's most beautiful book. It goes very deep, with endless subtleties there s a feeling all the time of its being written by the sea. A wonderful creation." Some of her favorites, maybe, or poets she feels were unjustly omitted? The premise of this book is that 100 poets chose a favorite poem from their own work--a neat idea for an anthology. Association copy, inscribed as a gift on the front free endpaper by David Brower, the first and longtime executive director of the Sierra Club: "For Karen Gosling, with every best wish, presumptively, David R. Brower (who likes the grand canyon, too), January 31, 1986." Gosling was the original office manager for the Earth Island Institute, the environmental project incubator which Brower founded in 1982 and which is still going strong. Gosling joined in 1986 (which perhaps explains that "presumptively," if Brower was recruiting her), and went on to be its longtime membership director. An unlikely signature in this volume, on the one hand, and yet Brower was instrumental in protecting the Grand Canyon from dams (after losing Glen Canyon), and famously was profiled by John McPhee in *Encounters with the Archdruid* rafting through the Grand Canyon on the Colorado with Bureau of Reclamation Director Floyd Dominy (the arch dam-builder). Published by the trustees and friends of the National Tropical Botanical Garden in a limited edition of 100 copies. This is copy 79. Merwin selected the poems for the book, 12 total, and each is accompanied by a black and white photographs taken by Freeman in 2004 at the NTBG and its affiliated gardens. Book and project design by Peter Ruthenberg. Full brown calf, silky to the touch, stamped with a silver title. Lovely photographic endpapers. About 30 pages total .
