Album, 60 pp recto and verso, "Autographs and Sketches" stamped in gilt to front cover, with approx. 35 gelatin silver prints laid in and letters, maps, diagrams, postcards, and foreign press clippings tipped in, label "J.M. de Beaufort / Author, Soldier, War Correspondent, late with the Belgian Army" attached to front cover, de Beaufort's business card taped to inner front cover, photographs laid in to front and back covers. Many pages loose or stained, some loss to three leaves, edgewear and toning throughout. Covers worn with tape remnants. Sold as is. J.M. de Beaufort was a war correspondent for the London Daily Telegraph and New York American, attached to the Belgian Army during World War I. De Beaufort described his wartime experiences in his 1917 book Behind the German Veil: A Record of a Journalistic War Pilgrimage. Some light rubbing and scuffing at spine tips and along joints and edges of boards; adhesive remains on front paste-down, where it appears a bookplate was removed; otherwise internally nice and clean. An extensive reference, including guides to marks and inscriptions, pronunciation, glossary, dynastic epochs, bibliography, and index.

[Italy], [c. 1720?]. Period stiff vellum with paper spine; 8vo (102 x 160 mm); pp. 287, closely written Italic and Gothic script, in brown ink, on recto and verso (handwriting becomes increasingly minute as entries progress). Front board stained and cracked; some faint browning along edges of text block, not infringing upon legibility. Attractive manuscript travel dictionary, with entries in Italian and definitions in German and on Italian paper but with a period German ex-libris inscription. The anonymous author lays the text out comfortably in the beginning, but becomes constrained by space -- at Z, the text becomes dense and the definitions run on from each other.

Canandaigua, 1814. Ephemera. Very Good+. Two partially printed leaves with manuscript entries, Document of non-payment to J. D. Commins, signed by the notary public, dated 1 Sept 1814 and 11 March 1828. Flattened creases from folding; remnants of wax seal. Single leaf, entirely handwritten (black ink, cursive) addressed to Jedidiah Commins, demanding payment.

New York, 1814. Ephemera. Near Fine. Single leaf (322x105mm), printed on the recto only with handwritten entries. Addressed to the Sheriff of county Ontario, asking that he bring George A. Wheeler to Court in Canandaigua to answer James Webb regarding debt. Signed by the clerk.

America, c. 1800. Paperback. Very Good. Contemporary limp calf; oblong 4to (190x130mm); pp. [2] (title-p.), 61 leaves (contemporary foliation to 63, lacking leaves 22-23), scores and lyrics (in English) in brown ink on recto and verso. Lower stitching gone; many leaves worn and chipped; 2 leaves loose. Early ownership signatures of John G. Scott on the title-page. A remarkable survival. A collection of seventy-eight songs, usually in treble and bass clef, with lyrics in English, offering an interesting look at the marches, popular songs, and ditties of the period. It includes songs from Ireland, Scotland, England, and France, as well as songs now thought to be distinctly American, including "Anacreon in Heaven," the tune that would become "The Star-Spangled Banner," and the very rare "Galley Slaves." New York, 1825. Ephemera. Very Good+. Partially printed document with handwritten entries, appointing Elizabeth Lounsbury the legal guardian of Winden N. Lounsbury, witnessed by Ebenezer Mix. Flattened creases from folding; foxing.

America, 1908-1915. Ephemera. Very Good. Three original photographs, silver prints. Two small, 82x46mm, action shots of a baseball game in progress, with the year 1908 in faint pencil on the verso (one with a tiny closed tear at top edge; a little silvered; but present nicely). One large, 176x120mm, team portrait of the C. B. C. Arcadians, dated 1915 (heavily chipped and torn along the edges).

California, 1914. Paperback. Very Good. More than 50 b/w or sepia silver prints, affixed to the recto and verso of disbound black leaves (175x134mm); photos range in size from about 10x15mm to 115x70mm, and some are captioned directly on the photo. Photographs are nicely composed, tho our amateur photographer makes occasional mistakes in focus or over/under-exposure. Occasional faint silvering, but prettily so. A fun collection of snapshots, offering a nice look at men and women's fashions of the period, as well as some pretty shots of date palms, and the south hills of Pamona. Primarily given over to portraits of friends and family, most labelled with the person's name (either in white ink below the image, or on the image itself), and all in the spirit of fun (a few shots include a burro names "Spuds"), if not the best taste (another image, showing a group of girls eating watermelon, is captioned "Pickaninnies"). Grey cloth over flexible boards; oblong (14x10.75 inches); contains more than 210 views by an accomplished amateur photographer, many of them hand-colored; silver prints (ranging in size from 3.5x3.5 to 3x5.25 inches), mounted 5 or 6 to the recto and verso of every page. Comprised of approximately 140 snapshots of India (native people, architectural details, religious statuary, street scenes, funerary pyres, studio portraits); 11 prints of Japan (landscapes and landmarks); 18 of Egypt (pre-historic sites and monuments); 35 of China (waterfront and street views). The images of Egypt and China are not hand-colored. Cloth a bit worn, with chipping along edges of boards; a few images silvered, but overall nicely preserved. A vibrant album.

Sheep over flexible boards; oblong 4to (352x275mm); contains 135 sepia photographs (silver prints), each about 4x5 inches, affixed to the recto and verso of black leaves (last half of text block left blank), many of them with handwritten captions beneath, in English (handsome cursive, white ink). Boards rubbed, and a little chipped and torn along the edges. Contents are fine -- photographs are nicely composed, exposed, printed, and preserved, with a little light silvering here and there, prettily so. Photographs of (mostly) landscapes and landmarks, showing the Promenade de Anglais and Regina Gardens in Nice, then aboard a cruise ship past Corsica to Cairo, showing ruins, monuments, some beautiful images of sailboats, and glimpses of the travellers with their guides (the ladies in hats and long, full dresses, alongside their guides in turbans and white cotton). Names are casually recorded -- Caroline, Aunt Mattie, Lillian, Ibrahim (appears to be a guide) -- and… Leer más

Leicester, Devon, et al, 1899-1909. Hardcover. Near Fine. Full leather (7-by-9 inches), all edges gilt, in hand-made cloth cover with calligraphic initials and floral motif embroidered on front cover; approx. pp. 200, different color papers, more than half full with autographs, prose, poems, and original artwork by numerous contributors. Cloth cover sunned along spine and edges, otherwise fine. A lovely volume. By turns funny and touching, this album compiled by Miss Elsie Nora Turner (who becomes a Mrs. along the way) includes original pen and ink drawings, watercolors, gouache, two sepia photographs (one including a very early image of a car), and 6 pages of autographs (including one with the heading, "My Wedding Day / June 9, 1909..." that is signed by her 4 bridesmaids). The artwork, contributed by friends and family, is invariably adept, ranging from the formal landscape, still life, or portrait, to cartoons (a cat caught in a goldfish bowl, a flamingo at battle with a frog, a man… Leer más
