An important collection of flowers, plants and herbs dating from 1886. Dense with sample leaves, petals and stems all artistically arranged on the pages. Index at rear points to the corresponding page numbers for several plants including; Columbine, America, Ladies Slipper, Larkspur, Lilies, Sweet William, The assembler has taken great care to arrange the specimens in decorative patterns and has used fern leaves extensively as a framing device. Amsterdam: Arkstee & Merkus, 1724. Hardcover. Very Good. Very nice copy bound in contemporary vellum; sopme toning to pages, generally quite fresh. With nice folding plates in excellent condition. Vol. 5 only.

France, early 18th century. 7 volumes, in folio and quarto. Manuscripts on paper, in French. Written in several hands over four decades, all hands are closely written, filling every page, in a neat secretarial script in brown ink and under calligraphic titles giving the addressee and date of letter. Collection contains full transcriptions of letters received from the French Calvary regiments, namely the Royal Carabiniers and the Régiment du Maine, the principal French military regiments active at the turn of the 18th century. The earliest letter is dated 1696 and the latest 1740. Addressed for the most part to various commanders of the brigades, French statesmen, or members of the court mainly in Versailles, Marly and Fountainebleau; with some near-contemporary marginal annotations, summaries and corrections. Signed "Max Alder out of the Hurly Burly" along the bottom margin. Some faint dust-smudging, else fine.

Library records indicate a publication date of 1915, and locate 5 copies worldwide. Bindings just a bit shelf-worn overall, with some fading to the spine lettering and light chipping at the corners. One instance of marginalia -- a previous owner's careful attempt at a stenography lesson, in purple ink. A handsome set. And uncommon.

Cloth-covered 3-ring binder (American manufactured), covers illustrated in black marker with drawings of top-hats, an ace of spades, an eight ball, faces, names, and maxims ("Flunk Early, Avoid the Rush," "Here's Your Hat What's Your Hurry?"). The inside front cover bears our author's name ("Budd Leader, Sophomore, 1st half") as well as a cloud of girls' names (Joan, Ginger, Darlene, Sally, Betty, Roberta, et al), perhaps referring to his lovely assistants -- women who put birds back in their cages, who comforted newly hatless rabbits, who were sawn in half, or who otherwise gave themselves to magic. This distinctly American binder is bursting with 382 tricks, handwritten in ink in tidy script, on lined paper, most of them accompanied by careful pencil drawings (demonstrations of steps and techniques) on small leaves of onion skin paper, stapled to the trick they describe. 1890. Hardcover. Very Good+. Business ledger of Dr. Worthington Pinney, a dentist practicing in Newark, New Jersey, in the 1880-90s. He was President of the New Jersey State Dental Society in 1886. Cloth-covered boards, gilt-lettered black leather label on spine, paper label on cover; pp. 641, 414 of which contain tidy handwritten records of dentist's patients. Just a little soiled and scuffed; text block bright, tight, clean. Records indicate the patient's name, the date and work done, and the costs charged and received. Poor Mr. Miller, for example, shows thirty procedures from 1882 to 1890, accruing nearly $200 in fees for extractions and gold fillings. Though the entries themselves are neat and methodical, they are not arranged in any discernible order, leaving one to wonder how the book-keeper managed to find the patient's record and keep it current. Items include a hook and ladder, poles, bolts, rings, cross-irons, "Steamer Eagle," "Steamer Huron," shoeing, and more; for a total of $65.72. A little wrinkling and off-setting from the adhesive.
