Staple-bound heavy cardstock wraps with tipped on photo-illustration of Mae McAvoy, with her name handwritten beneath; pp. 28, each with tipped-on and hand-labeled film stills and photographic images of celebrities, most with tissue guards. Front cover a bit sunned, lightly chipped along the edges; internally bright and clean, remarkably tidy in its layout and preservation. A collection of 110 images of actors from the silent film and early talkies era, including Inga Tidblad, Mona Martensson, Corinne Griffith, Milton Sills, Norma Talmadge, Colleen Moore, Charlie Chaplin, Lillian Gish, and many more. All images are neatly labeled by hand, with an indexed list of the actors handwritten on the inside rear cover.

Edinburgh: Printed by Robert Young and Evan Tyler, 1633-1649. Hardcover. Very Good+. Seven volumes bound in one, 4to, contemporary speckled calf with gilt lettering and ornament on spine, all edges marbled. A handsome binding, with just some light rubbing along joints and edges of boards. Each volume with wood-engraved title-page and illuminated initials, and tables of printed and unprinted acts. Check filled in (May 1830) and signed by James Fenimore Cooper, author of Last of the Mohicans. Drawn on his account at the Otsego County Bank in Cooperstown, NY. The check (for the large sum of $40) is made out to Harvey Clark, a carpenter who worked on Cooper's home. There are letters from Cooper mentioning Clark - (see Volume III, The Letters and Journals of James Fenimore Cooper; ed. J. Beard).

A remarkable anthology, featuring Imaginists (Ivan Gruzinov and Ivnev), Futurists (Budantsev, Echeistov, and "Erberg" Konstantin Aleksandrovich Siunerberg), Centrifugists (Aksenov and Sergei Bobrov), Eclectics (Nataliia Benar and Kazimir Kovalevskii), Neoromantic (Stenich), Parnassian (Aleksandr Federov), Symbolists ("Bely" Boris Begaev, Valerii Briusov, and "Sologub" Fedor Ternikov), Classicist ("Fet" Afanasii Shenshin), and Molina. Scarce -- Harvard holds a microfilm and states that only this one issue was published, other library holdings scant.

Engraved vignette on title, 11 engraved plates (7 folding) by JOHANN ADAM DESLSENBACH and ANDREAS NUNZER and engraved vignettes in text, 3 pages printed in red and black. (Lacking the portrait, as often.) Contemporary vellum, upper cover with oval stamped silver coat-of-arms. Provenance: Budapest, Hungarian National Museum ("A.M.N. Muzeum Könyv. Tarabol" and "Masodlat" old duplicate ink stamps on verso of titles). A "richly executed" (Faber) work on various ceremonies at the Viennese court. The illuminations and fireworks include designs by the architects BIBIENA, FISCHER VON ERLACH and HILDEBRAND. The ceremonies described were organized for festivities during the reign of Charles VI, Archduke of Austria (1685-1740), including the birth of his daughter and heir Maria-Theresa (1717-1780) and the death of Joseph I (1678-1711), elder brother of Charles VI. This is the original Italian edition, translated from English by Mario Pegna, of the Essay on the Present Literature of Italy; a classic but controversial work which epitomized the ardent interest of British Romantic writers in Italian literature. John Hobhouse, Lord Broughton, was a British baronet and diarist operating within the circle of Lord Byron in the early nineteenth century. Both Byron and Hobhouse, recognized peers in British society and Romantic Movement writers, made many trips to the Italian peninsula, subsequently publishing their reflections in collaborative works. Shelf numbers marked on spine, small blindstamp to title, inked accession number to foot of first text leaf, generally a clean example. With the ownership inscription of John Burns, and the College of New Rochelle bookplate. A charming suite of engravings (versos blank, though the pagination follows), accompanied by Gueuedville's translation. Cohen-de Ricci col. 740, Gibson 24.

Warmly inscribed by John Steinbeck on verso of half-title page: "John Steinbeck to his estimable elegant and virtuous friend Toby Street this tome presents". Webster "Toby" Street was a college pal, and the two remained close friends for many years, with their letters collected. Steinbeck's early effort "To a God Unknown" is indebted to a play abandoned by Street; Steinbeck names a drink after Street in Sweet Thursday. Original cloth, a bit worn, but hard to find flaws with such an outstanding association copy.

Inscribed on the half-title: "To Louis Auchincloss, intimate of the unsaintly Saint Simon whose impassioned percipience he celebrates and shares -- this little chronicle of striving in a poor country. / Arthur Miller / April, 1984." Auchincloss has added, in pencil: "See p. 249. Inge Miller told me that she read aloud to AM from 'The Cat and the King' after they went to bed in the month of rehearsals! Probably to put him to sleep -- LA." Also includes a card with a b/w photograph of Inge printed on the front, thanking Auchincloss for his kind words upon her death. Book is fine. Dust jacket a little sunned along spine, and very lightly rubbed at extremities; looks great in mylar.
