First edition. "The Value of Laughter" by Virginia Stephen (Woolf) was originally published on 16 August 1905 in The Guardian. Leslie Kathleen Hankins is a professor at Cornell College, Iowa, and a book artist. She is a former president of the International Virginia Woolf Society and has been presenting and publishing on Virginia Woolf  for several decades. In 2012, Hankins founded a press of her own, Making Waves Press.

Very fine, in a fine acetate dust wrapper. Black Sparrow Press was a small independent publishing house focused on avant-garde literature. Established by John and Barbara Martin in 1966, in Los Angeles, and shuttered in 2002 in Santa Rosa. With the help of typographer and printer Graham Mackintosh, the Press was responsible for drawing attention to Charles Bukowski and his literary work. There has been interest in reviving this press of late, and relocating it to the east coast.

Virginia Woolf was an amateur bookbinder who bound or re-covered books throughout her adult life, both for herself and for others. It is not known what motivated her to engage in bookbinding, but she was a publisher who set type and sewed the hand-printed books of her publishing house. She may have done binding as a creative outlet as her books exhibited enthusiasm rather than skill. OCLC: 46648822.

He wrote extensively on English and Scottish literature and culture. The inscription to his friend and fellow literary historian and critic Harry T.
