First edition, sole impression, one of 250 copies privately printed for the author; 8vo; original grey wrappers printed in black, some minor staining early and late, backstrip tanned, wrappers marked. A classically 'very good' copy. Printed for Herring by the great master printer of Dijon (who had, of course, printed Ulysses). Uncommon. From the library of Eric Walter White, though not marked by him.

Adelphoi Zangaki (the Zangaki Brothers) (active 1870s –1890s) were two Greek photographers who specialised in historic or ancient Egyptian scenes, producing prints for the tourist trade. Little is known about the brothers, except their initials, C. and G.

Roberts made a two-year journey to the Middle-East commencing in 1838, and whilst there executed numerous watercolours from which the finest were selected for the publication; The lithographs were executed by Louis Haghe. In order to help fund the project, Roberts produced a deluxe subscription edition, from which this lithograph was taken, which is notable for being the only edition to have original hand-colour, which would have been executed under the direction of the artist.

Calvert promoted and financed this expedition, under the command of Lawrence Allen Wells, to explore unknown portions of inland Western Australia in 1896-97. The expedition failed to make any great discoveries and really only "showed that most of the unknown portions of the interior were uninhabitable desert" (Wantrup).
