Single volume, illuminated manuscript on polished paper, in Arabic, 198 leaves, complete, 105 by 65 mm; single column, 21 lines elegant black naskh per page, surah headings in ref thuluth against gilt banners throughout, opening two leaves with elaborately decorated gilt head-pieces and further gilt polychrome additions to the outer borders, fihrist at the front of the Qur'an and closing prayers at the end copied in blue and red within arabesque shapes set against decorative floral backgrounds, catch-words, a few small stains and light finger-soiling, overall very bright and attractive condition; contemporary lacquered boards, framed within gilt borders (later gilding), edges painted with floral motifs in gilt, rebacked, a handsome copy. Very attractive pocket-sized Qur'an copied in a regular scribal hand and dated 1800 AH. Based on various accounts of wanderings in the Central Alps from the sixteenth century right up to the end of the eighteenth century. It concentrates on those taken by scientists and tourists.

[c.1858-62]. . Albumen print, 34.5 x 46 cm. (13.5 x 18 inches). Mounted on card. Fair tonal range and in good condition, card slightly damaged, title in manuscript on card. Although trained as a medical doctor, Dr. John Murray excelled as a photographer. The Scottish-born doctor was introduced to photography around 1849, while in the Medical Service of the Army of the East India Company. Stationed near the Taj Mahal in Agra, he evidently developed a considerable interest in the Mughal architecture of the region. Throughout the forty-year period that Murray lived and worked in India, he systematically recorded many famous buildings in and around Agra and the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. In the mid-1800s, no simple method of enlarging photographs existed. To make a sizable print, Murray worked with a large-format wooden camera capable of accepting negatives up to 16 by 20 inches. A rare survival announcing the appointment of Young as Lieutenant governor of the Eastern Districts, at a time when it was the urgent wish of the majority of settlers to be separated from the Western Districts. Following the return of David Livingstone from Africa in 1857 a coalition of groups from the Universities of Oxford, Cambridge, Durham, and Dublin established the The Universities' Mission, the first missionary society representing the high church end of the Anglican Church. The Mission existed from 1859 to 1909. This map, covering British Central Africa, German East Africa and Portuguese East Africa (parts of modern South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique and Tanzania), is presumed to have been produced as part of the fund-raising activities of the society. A highly unusual and interesting map. BLMC Maps 66115.(1.).

Pamphlet; 8vo (22x 14.5 cm); loose slip 'Compliments of Mr Richard Whitney, President, New York Stock Exchange'; original printed wrappers, removed from a larger binding, with resultant holes and residue to spine edge; 19, [1]pp. stock23 The story of Richard Whitney (1888-1974) is now infamous. President of the New York Stock Exchange, the man who boldly bid up U.S. Steel on Black Thursday, heralded for saving the market, who later defied the Senate's banking committee, and was in 1938 sentenced to between five and ten years in Sing Sing prison for embezzlement. This pamphlet is from a series of addresses Whitney gave to various business associations whilst president of the New York Stock Exchange in the 1930s. Their purpose was to defend the old practices, including short selling, and to exculpate the New York Stock Exchange from any criticism for the crash.
