London, Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 1972. . First edition, first impression; 8vo; publisher's boards, slightly bumped at upper fore-corners, red dust-jacket, unclipped and free of fading, small abrasion to upper panel, edge wear to top edge with slight loss to head of spine, small closed tear to foot of upper panel. A good example of a rare first edition to find in good order dust-jacket, this blessedly spared the fading to spine that plagues so many copies. The novel was the fourth by Berger, and won the Booker Prize that year. The author gifted half the Booker cash prize to the UK Black Panther Party, the rest he used to finance his studies on migrant workers that became A Seventh Man (1975), asserting that both endeavours represented aspects of his political struggle.

The first motor race was run from Paris to Rouen in 1894. But there was strong official resistance to racing on public roads, thereafter. Only persistent lobbying by manufacturers eventually led to a reluctant change of heart. They argued such a race offered huge promotional potential for an industry now employing thousands of workers. The race attracted around 300 entrants, of which over 200 actually set off, starting in the gardens of Versailles at 3.30 am on Sunday, 24th May. Such was the lack of experience in planning such a vast event, staged over a course of 1307 km, that the lack of crowd control and failure to anticipate the amount of blinding dust stirred up led to numerous accidents and injuries, as well as around a dozen fatalities. First edition of the author's first book; 8vo; title printed in red & black, Christmas gift inscription and sticker to half-title; publisher's red & black cloth, in the original dust-jacket minor wear to a few corners, but overall fine. A beautifully jacketed debut novel by this Scottish author who moved to the US; '...the story of a girl whose fearlessness antagonizes the little village in Scotland which is her home, of her effect upon the three men who love her, and how she perishes finally at the hands of her righteous townsfolk.' (jacket blurb). Quite a scarce imprint, the American publishing house Jonathan Cape & Harrison Smith only existing for four years before going bankrupt. Fortunately Jonathan Cape kept going in the UK, going on to publish, amongst many others, Ian Fleming; today it is an imprint of Vintage Publishing UK, owned by Random House.

Sometimes we have subtle etching of sunlight and shadow which seems to belong near Havell's Seats off Nobility. This book, largely an instructional work in planting trees suitably in hunting estates, may be less generally readable than the others but its plates are among the best. First edition, number 36 of 95 large paper copies; 8vo; unopened, mark to foot of one page, half-title with minor paper-flaw to fore-edge; original card wrappers with publisher's French folded printed dust-jacket, a little dust-soiled but overall very good. A very well-preserved example of this uncommon large paper edition, part of the Moray Library series. Gleeson White (1851-98) was a prolific player on the eighteen-nineties scene, editing several important periodicals from the time, including, with Charles Shannon, the Pageant. He provided the cover design for Wratislaw's Caprices, and was gifted number one of the special issue of that work by the author. The title Garde Joyeuse is taken from the name of castle given to Sir Lancelot in Arthurian legend.

Complete set of six screenprints in colours, 1982, on Fabriano paper, each signed, dated, titled, and inscribed 'AP' in pencil, one of 15 numbered artist's proof sets, aside from the edition of 100, printed by Domberger KG, Filderstadt, with the blind stamp, published by Prestige Art Limited, Mamaroneck, New York, each 68 x68 cm. (26¾ x 26¾ in.). Includes the titles Tulip, Lily, Zinnia, Rose, Phlox and Lilac. 'A Garden of Love' comprises of six colour variations of Robert Indiana's emblematic, square 'LOVE' composition. 'LOVE' is one of the most recognisable images of the American Pop Art movement and was a pioneering piece of hard-edged abstraction - an approach to painting that became widespread in the 1960s and is characterised by areas of flat colour with sharp, clear (or 'hard') edges. 'A Garden of Love' is just one of a number of adaptions of the original 1964 design. First US edition, first printing; author's presentation copy; 8vo; publisher's green cloth, rules and titles to upper board and spine gilt; with the pictorial dust jacket; A lovely copy in the tanned dust jacket. With the author's elaborate multicoloured, signed presentation inscription to the front free endpaper, 'for Walleye affectionately, eccentrically, horticulturally and exotically from Edward James'. Beneath the inscription is a beautiful four colour ink drawing of a root system and green shoots, the plant winding its way underling the author's signature. There are apparently variant dust jacket designs for this publication; the present example being that with the Paul Tchelitchew portrait on the upper panel.

Inspired by some of Rory's most popular Garden themed scarves this set of ten prints draws inspiration from celebrated gardeners and landscapers including Bunny Mellon, Vita Sackville-West and Gertrude Jekyll.
