However the more professionally equipped Norwegian expedition led by Roald Amundsen got there first. The former: inscribed lower left: ich ago garde du vizir / dans les Joutesthe latter: inscribed lower right: garde du vizir au campa pair, both oil on canvas Jean Baptiste Van Mour is recorded as having settled in Constantinople in 1699. It is thought that he was invited at the request of the French Ambassador Marquis de Ferriol, who commissioned the artist to paint 100 pictures of the local people. These were later reproduced as engravings, and consequently became very popular. Although the present two portraits do not appear to be after particular examples from this series, they are highly comparable in style.Each unframed: 33.6 x 24.4 cm.; 13¼ x 9 in.Each framed: 39.1 x 30.5 cm.; 15½ x 12 in.

First edition, inscribed by the author; 8vo; unmarked internally; publisher's red cloth, silver lettering to spine, with the price-clipped pictorial dustjacket, spine slightly faded, minor creasing to extremities; a near-fine example. Inscribed by the author on the title page: 'for Bob Bluth / with kind wishes / from Patrick O'Brian'. As usual, O'Brian has crossed through his name printed on the title page.

This railway guide was published by The Union Pacific System which was and is the second largest railway company in the United States and is based in Omaha Nebraska. The guide covers Oregon, Washington and Alaska.

First edition, one of 425 copies; 8vo; publisher's device to title, minor offsetting to endpapers, else unmarked internally, partly unopened; publisher's cloth-backed blue boards, paper label to spine printed in black, black lettering to upper cover, blue endpapers, spine and extremities slightly toned, else very good. One of 425 copies, printed at the Cuala Press, with the date misprinted as 'MCMXXVIV' on the title page (as noted by Wade).The Cuala Press originally started out as the Dun Emer Press in 1903, founded by Evelyn Gleeson. Influenced by the Gaelic revival occurring in Ireland, it promoted Ireland's cultural heritage, while at the same time training women to work in a useful trade. Eventually the two sisters of W.B. Yeats took over the press, continuing Gleeson's work, and renaming it The Cuala Press in 1908. Wade 163.

New York, Charles Scribner's Sons, 1979. . First edition; 8vo; publisher's boards, a little minor bumping, dust-jacket, 'Book Club Edition' issue, with moody monochromatic artwork by Edward Gorey. A very good first edition of this collection of weird & supernatural tales by British writer Robert Aickman, grandson of Richard Marsh (of The Beetle fame) no less. This is the first time these stories were collected, with no equivalent UK edition. The collection includes 'The Waiting Room', one of his most well-known spooky tales. The jacket artwork by one of the best illustrators of all things weird sets the mood perfectly.

First edition of the author's first book; 8vo; frontispiece; publisher's brown cloth, damp-mottled, dust-jacket slightly rubbed at edges, vertical crease to spine, otherwise very good. The first published book by the English art critic, novelist, painter and poet John Berger, whose novel G. won the Booker Prize in 1972. The novel revolves around the disappearance of Janos Lavin, a fictional exiled Hungarian painter, and his diary's discovery by an art critic friend called John; it was withdrawn by the publisher under pressure from the Congress for Cultural Freedom a month after its publication. Relatively scarce in good condition dust-jacket.

Hell and purgatory in Jainism, called Naraka, are realms of cosmology that are characterised my great suffering. There are seven realms of this universe, that are all situated in the 'lower levels' (adho lok), and they are all inhabited by various types of hellish beings. These beings contribute to the various types of suffering one might endure in a vision of Jain hell, including bodily pain, soul colouring (as seen by the dark figures depicted thus), physical transformation and pain inflicted on one other and torture inflicted by mansion-dwelling demi-gods and animals (such as the demons, snakes and scorpions depicted in these illustrations). Zhou Peichun was a famous Beijing folk artist and export painter in the late Qing Dynasty.The present album t contains 96 pictures showing Chinese men and women engaged in various occupations. Accompanying each picture is a brief description in Chinese that explains what the picture illustrates.
