A wonderful cartographic playing card in fine original colour.By the early 18th century the cartographic range of playing cards was almost completely dominated by one important family of map makers, the Amsterdam map publishing group founded in 1685 by Pieter Mortier (1661-1711). After his death, as his son was underage, the business was continued by his widow Amelia and brother David; his son Cornelis took over control of the business in 1721, and continued it in partnership with Johannes Covens, as Covens & Mortier, on into the 1780s under later members of the families.Extant sets of the cards can be found with a rule-book, bearing the imprint of Covens and Mortier, but it is likely that the cards were first published by Pieter Mortier towards the end of his life.All playing cards are rare: designed for play and being of small format, they were extremely vulnerable to damage from handling, and easy… Leer más

A group of six plates heightened with gold from the very scarce work Istoricheskie Opisanie Odezhdy i Vooruzhenia Rossiskikh Voisk published from 1841 to 1862 and edited by the military historian A. V. Viskovatov.

A lovely Beatles association, with Harrison's signed presentation inscription to the limitation leaf, 'to Hilary with love - George Harrison'. The recipient was Hilary Gerrard, a board director of Apple Corps and for four decades, Ringo's manager. Hilary and George had briefly shared a house some time in the 1970s.

A comprehensive railway map of British India, including the subcontinent and Burma, also displaying the main road networks, navigable canals, steamship routes, and telegraph connections across the peninsular. This publication by the Survey of India Office includes a useful 'References' key giving information on the differing gauges in use across the region, and a colour code highlighting the lands under direct British administration in pink, 'Tributary States' in yellow and 'Independent & Foreign Possessions' in Green. Louis Tracy (1863-1928), author, by training a journalist. Creator of a string of works of a quintessentially Edwardian Mystery nature, but also creator of several novels with future war and psi power elements. Occasional collaborator, under the alias of Gordon Holmes, with the great M.P. Shiel, who (uncredited) assisted him with several detective novels.

As well as reporting on the Congress, the author also gave glimpses of the scenery and of the social life of the people. The author said that he also discusses discoveries at Salona, Knin, &c, which he valued as interesting as those found in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Sleeman (1788-1856), an officer in the East India Company, achieved some renown for his part in the anti-Thugee campaign in the 1830's and 40's, before becoming a political resident in Gwalior, and later, Lucknow. The present work is arranged in the form of a tour and includes observations on Hindu social and religious rituals, crops, legends, witchcraft, etc. A very attractive work with good illustrations of Indian architecture. [London, 1846-49]. . Original hand-coloured lithograph on fine paper mounted on card as issued from the subscription edition of Roberts' 'Egypt'. David Roberts' magnificent images of Egypt and the Holy Land rank amongst the finest topographical views of the nineteenth century. Roberts made a two-year journey to the Middle-East commencing in 1838, and whilst there executed numerous watercolours from which the finest were selected for the publication; The lithographs were executed by Louis Haghe. In order to help fund the project, Roberts produced a deluxe subscription edition, from which this lithograph was taken, which is notable for being the only edition to have original hand-colour, which would have been executed under the direction of the artist. He was known as a Biblical commentator and an authority on Jewish antiquities (this reputation of his resting mainly on his Dissertation on the Civil Government of the Hebrews, published in 1740). As a Christian writer Rev. Lowman extols the virtues of Judaism as support for the Christian faith:'For a right Understanding of the Mosaical Ritual, requires some Knowledge of the rites themselves, together with some Understanding of the Ends, Designs, real Advantages, and Uses of them.
