Descripción:
St Petersburg, Obshchina Sviatoi Evgenii, 1910. . Landscape poster (36.5 x 28 cm); chromolithograph designed by Bilibin and dated 1910, pasted on to board, small loss of paper to top border, minor stain to right margin, wear to corners, a very bright and fresh example. A scarce and impressive piece of ephemera designed by Bilibin. The central panel features the most important religious saint days and feasts topped with the sun and moon and tailed with a winged hourglass. The two side panels contain the twelve zodiacs along with men representing each month of the year. Each figure is wonderfully adorned and illustrated with symbols reflecting the season. For example, the summer months carry flowers, a scythe, wheat, and fruit whilst December and January depict Christmas and Epiphany. The calendar is in the typical 'Bilibin' style of a magical and colourful world, firmly rooted in the stylised form of Russian folk and medieval art. As the very nature of calendars are ephemeral, examples of this… Leer más

Descripción:
Paris, [c. 1795]. . Five superb engravings with original handcolouring, 440 x 530 mm (sheet size). Born in Montreal in 1757, Grasset de Saint-Sauveur studied in Paris from 1764 before following in the footsteps of his father and brother by joining the diplomatic corps. He is better known however for his depictions of the costumes and habits of peoples from around the world, indeed Prof. Bernard Smith refers to him as 'the finest of the costume encyclopaedists of the late eighteenth century' (European Vision and the South Pacific, p113). The first of this set of five engravings shows the islanders of the Pacific, as known from the voyages of both Cook and Lapérouse whose two vessels disappeared in the Pacific in 1788, their fate unknown for nearly 40 years until Capt. Dillon discovered remains at Vanikoro. Saint Sauveur was captivated like many of his contemporaries by the discoveries in the Pacific and he includes in this print people from across the breadth of the ocean, from the Northwest… Leer más

London, Frederick Warne and Co., 1911. . First edition, first or second printing, with date to title, 16mo (160 x 110mm); colour frontispiece, plain title vignette and 26 colour plates, pictorial endpapers, publisher's green boards with mounted colour illustration, spine slightly faded, still near-fine overall; preserved in custom-made solander box with upper board of book replicated on lid. The story of Timmy and Goody Tiptoes is the only Beatrix Potter story apparently set in North America - although this is implicit rather than stated anywhere in the book. All the main animal characters are indigenous to North America: grey squirrels, chipmunks and a 'large bear' but the waters are muddied somewhat by the presence of Yellowhammers (or Emberiza citrinella, the birds that sing 'Little bita bread and-no-cheese!') whose range includes Europe and much of Asia but not America.
