Santa Barbara: Black Sparrow Press, 1975. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. One of 250 signed/numbered hardcover copies, octavo size, 209 pp., signed by Bukowski. Charles Bukowski (1920-1994) was "a prolific underground writer who used his poetry and prose to depict the depravity of urban life and the downtrodden in American society. A cult hero, Bukowski relied on experience, emotion, and imagination in his work, using direct language and violent and sexual imagery" (n.b., from the web site of the Poetry Foundation). As much as he achieved popular acclaim during his lifetime, his reputation and following have only increased after his death. This volume, "Factotum" is Bukowski's second novel. One of 1500 copies, two volumes (complete) with original dustjackets and slipcase, quarto size, 1018 pp., signed by Agnes Miller Parker. Edmund Spenser (ca. 1552-1599), often considered one of the best poets in the English language, penned this homage to Queen Elizabeth I in the form of an epic poem, his greatest work. John Austen (1886-1948), a well-known illustrator in his own right, was heavily influenced by Aubrey Beardsley and the Art Deco movement; for this lovely production of Spenser, Austen provided the pen decorations which open the Introduction, Contents, list of Illustrations, and each "Booke", with lovely chapter headpieces, rubricated initials, and an elaborate marginal decorative border. Limited edition, one of 200 copies, folio size, unpaginated [28] pp. Edward VIII (1894-1972), Prince of Wales, then King Edward VIII, and then the Duke of Windsor, made history when he abdicated the British throne in order to marry Wallis Simpson, an American divorcée, whom the monarchy and Parliament considered unacceptable for a future king to wed. Viewed as a hero by some for choosing love over kingship, Edward VIII gave an impassioned speech on the event of his abdication, saying, ". . .I have found it impossible to carry the heavy burden of responsibility and discharge my duties as king as I would wish to do without the help and support of the woman I love." No. 34 of 100 copies, folio size, six separate leaves plus two photographs, signed by Gary Snyder and Michael Mundy. Gary Snyder (b. 1930) is most often thought of in connection with the Beat Movement and the San Francisco Renaissance; he was the winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1975, the Bollingen Prize for Poetry in 1997, and the American Book Award in 1984, among other awards and honors. By many, he is thought of as the "poet laureate of Deep Ecology" (n.b., per Wiki). Paper copies bound in limp vellum, octavo size, first volume 261 pp., one of 300 copies, the second volume 374 pp., one of 250 copies, text in German. Founded in 1900 by T.J. Cobden-Sanderson and Emery Walker, the parnership dissolved in 1909 with Cobden-Sanderson continuing to print on his own. Justly famous for the purity of design and exactness of printing, it is always a thrill of sheer delight to hold a Doves Press book in one's hands. The two volumes published separately, Volume I in 1906 and Volume II in 1910. Volume I is one of 300 copies printed on paper (there were also 25 printed on vellum); Volume II one of 250 copies on paper (there having also been 22 on vellum). Roger Tory Peterson (1908-1996) was an imminent naturalist and ornithologist, as well as a talented artist, who first published "A Field Guide to Birds" in 1934, considered the first modern field guide. He went on to author or edit many field guides in what became the Peterson Field Guide series, on diverse topics such as minerals, reptiles, birds, and plants; his field guides are known for containing information accessible to the layperson, focusing on easily noticed visual features rather than technical features. This series garnered attention for the emerging environmental movement, and Peterson himself received every significant American award for natural science, ornithology, and conservation, including the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Ludlow Griscom Award. Quarto size, 347 pp. Alfred William Pollard (1859-1944) was an English bibliographer who was widely credited for bringing a higher level of scholarly rigor to the study of Shakespearean texts. This volume, part of the Connoisseur's Library, was intended to be a survey of both printing and book illustration from its beginnings to the (then) current day. In his preface, Mr. Pollard apologies for falling a bit short of the mark due to constraints both of "the limits of the present volume [and] of the author's working life". He promises that the full scope of printing has been included, but, alas, illustration only through about 1780; one wonders if he had planned another volume to cover that story of "a hundred and thirty years of very interesting picture-work". George Granville Barker (1913-1991), poet, was "partly associated with the New Apocalyptics movement, which reacted against 1930s realism with surrealistic and mythical themes. However, his characteristically independent idiosyncrasies set him off as an individual in his own right" (n.b., quote from Wiki). Mark Doty (b. 1953) is recognised as one of the most accomplished poets in America; hailed for his elegant, intelligent verse, Doty has often been compared to poets such as Walt Whitman. The recipient of numerous grants and fellowships, Doty has also won a number of prestigious literary awards including the Whiting Writer's Award, the T. S. Cecelia Holland (b. 1943) has written, to date, over twenty historical novels (of which this was the first published, although the fourth written) which span both the globe and time. In addition, she has authored a multitude of other fictional series, as well as short stories, children's books, and non-fiction. She was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1981-1982. This work, "The Firedrake", was the first of her historical novels to be published and follows the travels of Laeghaire, an Irish mercenary knight, who is reluctantly present at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. San Francisco: The Press of Lewis and Dorothy Allen, 1942. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Walker, Lawrence E.. One of 225 copies, duodecimo size, 61 pp. The exploration of California led many people to write effusively of the merits of Golden State, and Victor Fourgeaud (1815-1875) does so here in this reprint of a piece he wrote for "The California Star", the first newspaper in San Francisco, published by Samuel Brannan (1819-1899); made wealthy by the California Gold Rush, Brannan publicised the gold rush early, one example being Fourgeaud's writing, one of the earliest published accounts of the discovery of gold in California (per Kurutz). This early publication by the Allen Press features a reproduction of the only known photograph of Fourgeaud, pictured with his family, as well as two line drawings by Lawrence E. San Francisco: The Brownstone Press, 1971. No binding. Fine. A series of three broadsides, the "Butterfly Broadsides", printed by The Brownstone Press during the years 1970 to 1971. While we cannot be certain whether or not additional broadsides in the series were published, it appears likely that these three constitute the entirety. As of this writing, only two of these three broadsides are represented in the online marketplace (only one or two copies each) and our search of OCLC locates only these three titles. All three of the poets were beat poets: John Wieners (1934-2002), born in Massachusetts, moved to California in 1957 and joined the artistic community in North Beach, actively participating in the San Francisco Poetry Renaissance. Jack Hirschman (1933-2021) was, before Vietnam, a teacher at UCLA; that ended when he encouraged his students to resist the draft; he moved to San Francisco and would spend the next quarter-century as "an active street poet and a peripatetic activist." Sixteenmo size, 109 pp. Lowell Mason (1792-1872) was an influential figure in music education and church music in the United States during the nineteenth century. He composed many hymnal arrangements including those of "Joy to the World" and "Nearer, My God, to Thee", and wrote this book to teach thorough base (often styled "thoroughbass"), to children. Two volumes (complete, see below), octavo size, 927 total pp. Henry Cholmondeley-Pennell (1837-1915) authored several books on fishing, including "The Angler-Naturalist" (1863), "The Modern Practical Angler" (1870), "The Sporting Fish of Great Britain" (1886) and "Modern Improvements in Fishing Tackle and Fish Hooks" (1887). He also, of course, published "The Book of the Pike" in 1865, whose first printing, in serial form, is in these two volumes. These two volumes include the monthly installments beginning with April of 1864 and ending with October of 1865, which comprise the entirety of the publication; apparently this periodical was ended when its successor, "Land and Water", was introduced. An early photographic account of New England, each volume has a one-page introduction and 30+ black and white plates. Of especial interest to any of us who have lived or currently live in the areas pictured, as the changes over the past 100+ years have been seismic. ___DESCRIPTION: Five volumes, staple bound, original paper wrappers with titles embossed in gilt, five pages of text printed to recto only, 171 black and white plates with captions, all printed to recto only; oblong octavos (5 7/8" by 8"). ___CONDITION: All five volumes are in varying degrees of very good condition, the wrappers all display a bit of age toning but all are internally bright and complete with no prior owner markings, "New England Lakes" and "Rivers of New England" have some chips and tape repairs to the wrappers, with "Rivers of New England" lacking the back wrapper,… Leer más

As put forth on the first page of the book, " 'A Flame in the Heart' is dedicated to those we love with a blazing passion, to those we hope will burn in hell, and ideally, to the future separation of the two." A stunning production, with passions throbbing on every page; even the title page has a small illustration of a human heart set within flames. "Love and hate are here threaded together...One flame both warms and burns..." (from the colophon). Dunmow Essex: The Workshop Press [Mark Arman], 1988. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. One of 170 copies, quarto size, 63 pp., signed by Mark Arman. The author, Mark Arman, began printing in 1949; at that time, he shares in the book's Introduction, "type decorations did not interest me." He goes on to elaborate on his growing interest in these decorations, which interest and knowledge would eventually culminate in this book. Not only is the work a fascinating look at the history and use of type decorations, but the insights into the printing process of this particular book, as set forth in the Postscript, is a delight to those, such as myself, who are only vaguely aware of the amount of time it tooks to produce a hand-set, hand-printed book: "...at this time there is a consciousness that making such a book has taken a year of one's life."
