Contemporary Dutch vellum gilt prize binding for the Enkhuizen Latin School, smooth spine divided into four panels by gilt double rules, flower head to centre of each panel, covers with double fillet border and large central coat of arms of Enkhuizen. Covers rubbed and a little soiled, small chip to head of front joint, lacks ties. Internally some light browning, small hole in N1 catching the page number, stain to bottom margin of T2 (not affecting text). Complete with frontispiece by G. Schoute, and twenty-seven (including four folding) further engravings by J. Van Vianen, title in red and black. Bound by Meinard Semeins, with his advertisement leaf bound in to rear. Two engraved broadsides - 'A List of His Majesties Royal Navy, Shewing When They Were Built & Rebuilt, their Several Dimensions and Tonnage, with their highest & lowest Compliment of Men ye Number, Nature, Length & Weight of Guns on ye several Decks of Each Rate' and 'The Pay of the Officers & Men in ye Royal Navy, together with the Number in each Rate, and their Daily Allowance of Provisions, and ye Number of Ships', single sided engraved broadsides. Both cropped to margins, with loss to imprint of second mentioned, creased from old folds, browned, with several small chips and tears. First mentioned with significant closed tear from left hand side, but missing engraved text, with old heavy reinforcing to reverse. The 'Pay' sheet gives detailed summaries including the rates paid to the ships' barber, gunners taylor and chaplain. Twenty-seven tissue-guarded tinted lithographs and one engraved dedication leaf, with advertisement leaf to rear, in the publishers quarter morocco and cloth binding, smooth back with title in gilt to spine and upper cover, primrose endpapers. Recently rebacked by Temple Bookbinders with original backstrip laid on. Corners bumped, rubbed to extremities. Internally some light foxing, but generally quite bright and clean. With 'Critical Notices' and the printed prospectus for the book laid in loosely. Abbey Travel 152. First Edition. Quarter Morocco and Cloth. Good+. Folio.

Handsomely rebound by Temple Bookbinders in full morocco, raised flat bands, spine in six panels, title and author labels to second and fourth panels, remaining panels gilt, covers with double panel design, inner panel with black onlay, elaborate gilt borders, gilt to inner edges with marbled endpapers. Internally some light soiling and offsetting, some plates with faint offsetting from text but generally clean, folding plates a little creased at outer edge, plates with stab-holes to outer margins. Externally a couple of minor scrapes but generally very good, internally light browning to text, occasional light foxing, closed tear to 2Z, aquatints quite bright and clean. Original paper label laid on to ffep, with previous owners name to head. Complete with seven (six coloured) aquatints. Internally occasional light foxing, mainly to engravings, occasionally heavier, but generally quite clean, gift inscription in pen to head of one of the text leaves, Bolingbroke (who should be in volume ten) is in volume eleven. Each volume with twenty engraved plates, for a total of two hundred and forty as called for, each plate is accompanied by a brief biographical essay of varying lengths. Reprint. Recent full morocco, Cosway style, binding by Temple Bookbinders, raised bands, spine in six panels, blue leather title label to second panel with matching author label to fourth, remaining panels gilt, with central pink rose and gilt volute corner pieces, date to foot of spine. Covers with double line border, floral spray corner pieces with pink roses, upper cover with sunken central panel containing a watercolour on vellum by Martin Frost, after an illustration from the book by Hugh Thomson, gilt roll to inner edges, a.e.g. with Cockerell marbled endpapers, and hand sewn endbands. London: Samuel Leigh, 1815. [2], xviii, 96pp, plates. Later half roan, smooth back divided into six panels by single gilt rule, title label to second panel. Rebacked and recornered, original spine laid down with small amount of loss, bump to head of lower board, inner joints strengthened. Internally some light browning, plates with light foxing and browning to edges and often to images, but tolerably clean. With hand-coloured aquatint frontispiece and fifty uncoloured aquatint plates (as called for). Not in Abbey. First Edition. Half-Leather and Cloth. Good. 4to.

Quarter calf and marbled paper over boards, paper covered corners, smooth back, divided into six panels by gilt roll. Foot of spine slightly chipped, new paper sides. Internally there is a small stain to gutter at head of several pages, but it is fairly unobtrusive. A few pages have a cross in ink to head. The first mentioned is uncommon, with four locations on COPAC, but none with this imprint and none of the same date, the second is well held institutionally, but again none with this imprint or date. The Magdalen Hospital was established in 1758, later renamed Magdalen Hospital for the Reception of Penitent Prostitutes, it provided a refuge and a place where prostitutes could be treated and cared for. Full contemporary straight grain morocco, smooth backs, divided into six panels by single gilt rules, author to second panel in gilt and volume number to third, covers with single fillet border, gilt roll to edges and inner edges, a.e.g., with stormont pattern marbled endpapers. Ex-library but no evidence. Spines dulled and slightly discoloured, rubbed to extremities, couple of minor chips to spine ends. Hint of browning and very occasional spots of foxing internally, but generally fairly bright and clean. Previous owners book label to front pastedowns. Edited by Richard Heber when he was eighteen.
