George Henry Williams (1823-1910) had a prolific political career, serving as Chief Justice of the Oregon Supreme Court from 1853-1858, US Senator from Oregon from 1871-1875, and US Attorney General from 1871-1875. In his time as Attorney General under President Ulysses S. Grant, Williams continued prosecutions that shut down the Ku Klux Klan and dealt with election disputes that frequently emerged during Reconstruction.

Small octavo, x, 389pp. Blue cloth, border stamped in blind on front cover, title in gilt on front cover and spine. No additional printings listed on copyright page. Solid text block, faint toning to endpapers, light rubbing to corners and spine, a near fine example. Complete with 19 full-page plates, including frontispiece. In publisher's dust jacket, faint soiling to front and rear panels, slight chipping to corners and spine, toning to spine, one short closed tear to rear panel, a very good example. This biography, written by the subject's daughter, Sophie Radford De Meissner, outlines the naval achievements of Rear Admiral William Radford (1809-1890). Radford served during the Mexican-American War and fought for the Union in the Civil War despite being born in Virginia.

Lithographed and published by Currier & Ives at 152 Nassau St., New York. Short closed tear along top edge, archival tissue repair. Printed on wove paper. Includes 2 stanzas and 4 lines of verse by Samuel T. Woodworth. Original artwork by Frances Flora Bond Palmer. Image measures 15 15/16 x 23 3/8. (Conningham 4576) In wood frame, not examined outside of frame. An attractive work. "When Frances "Fanny" Flora Bond Palmer moved to New York from England in 1844 she was thirty-two and an accomplished artist and printmaker. Initially, Fanny and her husband Seymour operated a small print-shop in lower Manhattan, similar to one they had run in Leicester (United Kingdom). Toronto: Belford Brothers, Publishers, 1876. First Edition, Later Issue. Cloth. Very good. First pirated edition of Old Times on the Mississippi by Mark Twain.. Octavo, [3]-157, [1], [2pp ads]. Publisher's original brown cloth, title in gilt on spine, title in gilt on cover with decorative design in black. A mixed issue variant, with an advertisement not mentioned in BAL. Includes an advertisement for Tom Sawyer opposite the title page, imprint in roman numerals and an advertisement for Pausanias the Spartan (BAL 3368, Reprint B). The last advertisement is for Capital New Books, which is not mentioned in BAL. Previous owner's bookplate, with date of May 30, 1877 in pencil on front fly leaf. A scarce copy, with only one known copy appearing at auction. This work was first published in The Atlantic Monthly, from January - August of 1875. The first authorized publication in book form was included as part of Life on the Mississippi in 1883.
