Marshak, a major children's book author and editor of the early 20th century, is best known today for his collaborations with the artist Lebedev and the publisher Raduga, of which this is a gorgeous example. Raduga led the innovations that characterized the Golden Age of Soviet Russian picture books, with an approach similar to Flammarion's Père Castor series in Paris - using avant-garde philosophies to make books designed to encourage interactive reading - but its influence spread well beyond the world of children's literature and into mainstream modernist art. Kate Greenaway achieved great success in 1878 with her first solo publication UNDER THE WINDOW, and quickly became a household name. This achievement came after years of study at the National Art Training School and the Heatherley School of Fine Art, where she rubbed shoulders with the likes of Elizabeth Thompson (later Lady Butler), Edward Burne-Jones, and Walter Crane. On page 140 is a facsimile of a story written by Greenaway for Severn. Severn gave special permission for the story to be produced for this edition. Includes a picture of founder Joseph Sears, as well as those of several houses and buildings. Most images though of natural surroundings. While the album's exact purpose is unclear (though we presume promotional or perhaps survey), a fine assemblage by an accomplished photographer that exhibits a strong Pictorialist influence. Oblong 4to. album with pebbled flexible leather boards and gilt titles, 7.25" x 10.75" approx. Seventeen photographs mounted recto only, all 4.5"x 7.5" approx. Remaining leaves blank.
