Beautifully bound set of the works of the French playwright, from the library of Frances Mary Richardson Currer, who was among the most celebrated book collectors of her era. This set was once owned by Yorkshire coal heiress Frances Mary Richardson Currer (1785-1861), who built a celebrated library of some 20,000 volumes. Contemporaries praised Currer's scholarship and taste, as well as the rigorous organization and "choice condition" of her books. The bibliographer Thomas Frognall Dibdin called her a "book-genius," and remarked of her library: "I may fairly and honestly say, that with the exception of Althorpe, Chatsworth, and Stowe, I know of NO such collection of books, situated in the country that can pretend to break a lance with it [...] The 'Collections' are nearly perfect." OF HUMAN BONDAGE was an early career work in which, "we have nearly all the motifs that reappear in the later Maugham," notes Alexander Boyle, including his habit of writing parts of himself into many of his books: OF HUMAN BONDAGE is certainly his most autobiographical. Its first film adaptation, pre-code in 1934, starred Leslie Howard and a very slinky and emotionally raw Bette Davis. It was Davis's first large-scale success, and though she was passed over for the Best Actress Oscar that year, the role established her as a star. First edition of the play version of John Steinbeck's landmark work, following the tragedy of two migrant farm workers in the Great Depression. Published in the same year as the novella, the OF MICE AND MEN play was adapted for the stage by Steinbeck himself. The play made its Broadway debut under director George S. Kaufman while the novella was still at the top of the bestseller list; Kaufman advised Steinbeck on the stage adaptation, urging him to "preserve the marvelous tenderness of the book," but also to add "a little more humor" to "heighten the subsequent tragedy by comparison" (Steinbeck and Wallsten). WWII-era edition of the officer's reference manual belonging to Captain Herbert Roy Orr, commanding officer of the first African American signal aircraft warning company. Orr, a Washington DC native, joined the ROTC while studying electrical engineering at Howard University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in 1931 and a master of science in 1935; he subsequently taught electronics at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical College. Upon the United States's entry into World War II, he was assigned to the 366th Infantry Regiment at Fort Devens, Massachusetts. His copy of the OFFICERS' GUIDE is labeled with this unit name and address. The 366th was notable in the US Army for being an all Black unit: having Black officers as well as troops. Authorized American edition of this early large format Père Castor book, featuring striking and stylized Art Deco color lithographs by Russian émigré artist Guertik with dotted lines for children to finish the designs. It was émigré artists like Guertik, Nathalie Parain, Alexandra Exter, Feodor Rojankowsky, and Georges Cherkessof, working with avant-garde Constructivist, Dadaist, and Minimalist art philosophies, that gave the Père Castor books their greatest distinction and gained them long-lasting fame.
