First edition of this charming story of a mouse's efforts to keep her house tidy in the face of numerous insect visitors - one of Beatrix Potter's scarcer titles. Beatrix Potter's early "microscopic studies showing the beautiful coloured scales of butterflies' wings, and the highly magnified anatomy of spiders and beetles" informed her loving drawings of MRS. TITTLEMOUSE's various arthropod house guests (Linder, 205). Potter's publisher, though, was not quite as warm to the insect characters: her initial inclusion of wood-lice irked Warne, who "did not consider [the wood-louse] a suitable creature to mention in a children's book" (Linder, 205). First edition in book form of this classic story of love and the weight of family history set during the French Revolution, one of Dickens's best-known works. First issued in serial format like most of Dickens's novels, A TALE OF TWO CITIES features a setting that "had been [Dickens's] historical favorite for many years." He reportedly "entered the mental and mechanical work" of writing the story "with great spirit" (Eckel, 86). Dickens began TALE shortly after starring in the Wilkie Collins play THE FROZEN DEEP, which features the familiar theme of a love triangle in which one member sacrifices himself for the good of the remaining two. TALE has been adapted for stage, screen, and radio numerous times, with the villainous Marquis St. Evremonde being played by Basil Rathbone and Christopher Lee. Much like her iconic PETER RABBIT, MR. JEREMY FISHER began as a story letter from Beatrix Potter to the child of a friend. After PETER's publication, Potter speculated that she "could make something out of" MR. JEREMY as well (Linder). When her publisher questioned the accuracy of her frog illustrations, she "brought the live Jeremy to the office in a jam jar" to back up her stylistic choices (Linder). Philadelphia: Henry Altemus, 1904. Very good.. Early American pirated edition of the English classic, part of Henry Altemus's Wee Books for Wee Folks series. At the turn of the 20th century, a number of American publishers found success in reprinting English books without authorization (or payment) to the original publishers if those publishers did not take steps to secure their copyright in the United States. Altemus was one such publisher, and the famous TALE OF PETER RABBIT one such book. According to the information provided on the Henry Altemus Company collecting website (henryaltemus.com), this version is the second issue of the first American edition. (That site calls it the second edition, but notes the interior is the same as the first edition; it just has a new binding. Hence technically it is second issue, not edition, the latter of which implies a new setting of type.) The characters in this story were named after two real pigs on her Hill Top Farm, with many of the bucolic landscapes still identifiable today on Potter's former property, now a National Trust site. PIGLING BLAND was the second book, after THE TALE OF MR. TOD (1912), in a new direction for Potter: a longer story, with fewer color plates but many more black-and-white images in the text. 5.25'' x 4''. "Miss Potter need not worry about rivals. She has none," proclaimed THE BOOKMAN's review of THE TALE OF JOHNNY TOWN-MOUSE in 1918 (quoted in Linder, 244). Certainly this title carries all the hallmarks of Potter's talent: beautiful countryside, well-dressed animals, prose that is both efficient and evocative. Included in these twelve tales are the pieces that are often anointed as the first modern detective stories: "The Murders in the Rue Morgue," "The Mystery of Marie Roget," and "The Purloined Letter," all featuring his famed character C. Auguste Dupin.
