Uncommon and stylish French edition of the ur-Gothic novel, with the finest paperback cover illustration ever offered to Ann Radcliffe in any language. For reasons best known to themselves, the US paperback publishing houses which frantically dredged up and reprinted any proto-gothic, semi-gothic, quasi-gothic, and not a few Not Gothic classics throughout the '60s and early '70s neglected to refurbish and re-issue Radcliffe (or Lewis) in the same style. Bram Stoker, yes; Lady Caroline Lamb, yes; Ann Radcliffe, no. For an excellent modern Udolpho that looks well on the bookshelf and better in the hand, one must go to France, which did and does very well by English authors in translation. ULYSSES first saw print in the modernist literary magazine THE LITTLE REVIEW, edited by Margaret Anderson and Jane Heap. Midway through their serialization, issues of the magazine were seized and the editors were brought to trial in the fall of 1920. When they were convicted, ULYSSES was abandoned, only about half of it published. ULYSSES first saw print in part through the modernist literary magazine THE LITTLE REVIEW, edited by Margaret Anderson and Jane Heap. In a very French take on the moon voyage, the climax of activity is baking moon-themed treats. After little moon creatures destroy their balloon, the Mistress of the Moon sends them home in a parachute. The vividly stylized illustrations pair with minimalist sentences with surprising storytelling force. OCLC locates only one institutional holding (the BnF). 12'' x 9.5''. First edition of arguably the most influential novel in US history, in the scarce publisher's extra gilt binding. Well educated in a large, abolitionist family, Stowe was already involved in anti-slavery activities by her early 20s, including participation in the Underground Railroad. With the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act in 1850, the "number of kidnappings and forcible re-enslavements of black people was growing almost daily" (Hedrick, 205), and Stowe chafed at the tepid response of those around her: "You don't know how my heart burns within me at the blindness and obtuseness of good people on so very simple a point of morality as this [...] I feel as if my heart would burn itself out in grief and shame that such things are" (1 Feb 1851 letter to Henry Ward Beecher, quoted in Hedrick, 204-5). Simpson was a member of the Detection Club along with Dorothy Sayers, Agatha Christie, Baroness Orczy, and a host of lesser lights, as well as the founder of the Oxford Women's Dramatic Society; a notable early work, ENTER SIR JOHN, joined the two worlds of theatre and murder and was the first of her novels to be filmed by Hitchcock, as MURDER! (1930). UNDER CAPRICORN was the second, eliciting wildly varied reactions.
