New York: Lehmann Maupin 2001, 2001. Large 4to, 64pp, 72 colour plates (inc 2 gatefolds). Fine in cream cloth with black and caramel stamps in grey card slipcase. The first, and only, edition of this legendary and much-cited photography book. It is Teller's record of the 1999 Miss World competition where he photographed each contestant. The portraits are all close-ups and are reproduced here in a highly polished and glossy form. The atmosphere of brittle unreality which hangs over beauty contests and where we see only a heavily worked artificiality is cleverly captured in these celebrated images. Lots of hair and teeth. A signed and numbered edition of 500 - this is 300/500. Fine

[Winterton, Lincolnshire] n.p. undated [pre 1804], 1802. Original pen and coloured ink drawing (146x108mm) of a mosaic floor on thick paper, mounted on card (198x140mm) and framed. Beneath the drawing is inscribed "William Fowler Fecitt (sic)" and the description "A Tessellated Floor of an Ancient Bath in Nants (sic) in the South of France supposed to be Built by Antonious (sic) Pius". The hand-coloured engraving of this mosaic appears in volume one of Fowler's Engravings of the Mosaic Pavements &c published in 1804. This beautiful drawing is in excellent condition with the colours particularly fresh. Original drawings by Fowler are rare and this is a particularly fine example. William Fowler (1761-1832) was born in Lincolnshire where he ran his own business as a builder and architect. He also produced, in his spare time, a large quantity of drawings of old buildings, tombs and brasses, stained glass, and Roman mosaic pavements. Roman mosaics had first been excavated in Fowler's home town of… Leer más

Santa Rosa, California Black Sparrow Press 1994, 1994. Limited edition, one of 750 paperback copies published for friends of Black Sparrow Press. 210x146mm. pp. 40. Original decorative wrappers, stapled. Very slight marking to lower cover but otherwise a near fine copy. Lawrence produced this work for the Daily Chronicle while waiting for Lady Chatterley's Lover to start selling. At a time when a bill giving women the vote was passing through Parliament, the British newspapers were very keen on this type of material. It was discovered by Roy Spencer in the files of the Daily Chronicle. The book reproduces in print the finished manuscript version, the variorum manuscript version and the newspaper version together with notes and short essays on the publishing history of the work. We are selling 14 copies of this paperback version of That Women know best. They are all in the same condition as described here.

Bookplate to front pastedown, contemporary ownership inscription of "Babington" dated March 1790, early pencilled marginalia throughout (most angry-looking crosses). Very good A scandalous anonymous work. Martin Madan (1726-90), first cousin of William Cowper, had already attracted public attention when, in 1750 he made the career switch from lawyer to Methodist preacher, but the impact of this book, in which he advocated polygamy and argued elaborately that it was in accordance with Christianity, was sensational. His patroness, Lady Huntingdon, told him even before publication that she had… Leer más

Stockholm: Foto Expo 1965, 1965. First edition. 12mo (199x147mm). pp. [32, [8] (unpaginated). 38 black and white photographs, text by Per Olaf Sundman, Peter Weiss and Tor-Ivan Odulf, design by Erik Pettersson. Original black and white photo-illustrated covers. Protected by transparent plastic wrapper. The whole is in fine condition. Strömholm was initially associated with Subjective Photography and Otto Steinert's Fotoforum group who saw photography not as reportage but as a reflection of the photographer's personal view of the world, though he left when he felt that their aspirations were too formalist. In this, his first book, we see many of the motifs that would recur throughout his later work.

London: Printed for J.Whiston and B.White 1758, 1758. First edition. 4to. 210x130mm. pp. vii, [i], 99, [1bl]. Modern speckled calf, borders to upper and lower covers decorated in blind, spine lettered in gilt. Some foxing and browning but overall a very good copy of a scarce and ground-breaking book on madness and mental health. William Battie (1703-76) was a Fellow of the Royal Society and President of the Royal College of Physicians. His principal medical interest was in what he called "the mad business". He worked at Bethlem which at that time was located in Moorfields on the edge of the City of London (it still exists as a psychiatric hospital in South London and is the oldest such institution in the world). Horrified by the conditions and poor treatment at Bethlem (not least the practice of allowing the public to pay to observe the patients), Battie founded, in 1751, St Luke's Hospital for Lunatics under the patronage of the Earl of Cardigan to whom this book is dedicated. London: Printed for J. Newbery 1760, 1760. First edition. 8vo (200x120mm). pp. [2], vi, 264. Contemporary calf with double fillet borders in gilt to upper and lower covers, five raised bands to spine, compartments simply decorated with gilt borders. The binding is worn in places with scuffing, particularly to the foot of the upper cover at the joint and on the lower cover near the joint where there is cracking. Corners bumped and rubbed. But overall this is a handsome, simple and tight binding. The contents are in excellent condition, bright and fresh with only a little foxing. The corner of K1 has been lost in opening but this does not affect the text. Edges sprinkled red. The dedication, although declared to be James is by Samuel Johnson who was a school friend of James's from Lichfield. This highly readable book contains a series of case studies showing the horrific results of dogs biting people. The resulting "hydrophobia" or rabies is described with some relish by James who then offers a number… Leer más

Lairesse (1641-1711) was a major figure in the art world of the Dutch Golden Age.
