An edited collection of newspaper reports tracking General Ian Standish Montieth Hamilton's Boer War campaign from Bloemfontein to Pretoria, which included ten major battles. Covers triple ruled in gilt, spines with five raised bands elaborately tooled in gilt in compartments. Two black morocco labels lettered in gilt. Gilt ruled board edges , decorative gilt turn-ins, navy blue endpapers with gilt 'moon' design, all edges gilt. Small chip on one of the spine labels on volume II. With the original gilt lettered black cloth covers and spines bound in at the end of each volume. Collating Axvi, 282; vi, [283]-562. Measuring 135 x 80mm and collating complete including frontis: [4], 216. A charming example, with gentle bumps to corners and binding firm; rebacked with original spine laid down. Contemporary gift inscription to recto of frontis: "Fanny Tomkinson given her by Miss Morris. Febry 16th 1824." Slight offsetting to title and occasional foxing, but overall a fresh, unmarked example. Scarce institutionally and in trade, we have located 8 examples in OCLC. Housed in a custom green morocco-backed folding box. An exceptionally Fine copy which is bright and crisp. Fine dust jacket with only the most trivial rubbing to extremities, otherwise extremely bright and fresh. Presentation copy inscribed by the author "For Guy G. B. Reedy, John Steinbeck" on front free endpaper. A signed limited edition was also issued by the publishers in 1936. Steinbeck met Reedy when he moved to New York in the early 1920s and both men worked on the construction of Madison Square Garden. Steinbeck left after seeing a co-worker fall to his death, but the two remained close, and Steinbeck inscribed first editions of all his books for Reedy. Monell on front paste-down. Written under the nom-de-plume of clergyman Richard Harris Barham, The Ingoldsby Legends was a collection of myths and ghost stories that blended humor with the grotesque. Largely composed in rhyme, the stories emphasize figures such as saints and gods; and they were published to delight a Victorian audience increasingly interested in sensationalist gothic literature.
