Octopussy traces Bond's work to apprehend a WWII hero involved in the theft of a cache of Nazi gold. Told largely from the perspective of Smythe, whose flashbacks track Bond's work to arrest him, the story poses a dilemma for 007, who wishes to spare the reputation of a man who has devolved from hero into alcoholic eccentric.
