Small abrasion to copyright notice at bottom left, obscuring the date. Very good. Attractively matted and framed, with the original cloth binding in a pocket on the back of the frame. An impressive and uncommon map of northwest Washington state and southwestern British Columbia, and the largest obtainable map of this period for the Pacific Northwest. The map was drawn by F.M. Dehly, a draftsman for the Seattle civil engineering firm of Thomson & White, credited in the title as compiling the map from "Official Records and Personal Reconnaissance." The area of the map extends from Bowen Island (across the Gulf of Georgia from Vancouver Island) in the north, south to Tilamook County in far-north Oregon, with the Columbia River as the effective southern boundary line. Newport, Ky.: The Donaldson Litho. Co., [ca. 1920].. Chromolithographic poster, 27 1/2 x 41 3/4 inches. Several tears at edges, two of them significantly affecting the image. Some chipping and loss along top left and lower right edges, also a bit in top right corner. Still, a striking image. Good plus. An attractive poster advertising one of W.I. Swain's popular touring western shows, this one featuring Jesse James, who in this portrayal has an African-American as a member of his gang. The illustration shows three men on the right edge with their hands held high, while a fourth man next to them weakly drops his gun. On the left side a cocky man in a white shirt (presumably James) points a six shooter at the men across the room, while a blonde woman in a red dress stands with one foot on a chair and the other on a desk, also pointing guns at the men. Anomalously, in the center of the image, through a window, a Black man in a red shirt also points two guns at the men on the right, while inside the room… Leer más

[Philadelphi, 1900. 48pp. plus two-sided folding leaf and two- sided printed wrappers, containing approximately 150 photographic images (over seventy in color). Original printed wrappers. Spine neatly repaired with black cloth tape. Some wear, small chips in wrappers. Very good. Richly illustrated color catalogue for W.T. Smith & Son, Philadelphia-based textile manufacturers with offices in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, St. Louis, New Orleans, and elsewhere. The catalogue features electro-tint engravings and descriptions of Smith & Son's wide array of wares, including its "Seamless American Oriental," Royal Axminster, Persian, Smyrna, Saxony, and Navajo styles of rugs and carpets, chenille table covers, lace curtains, "Pilgrim Fibre Porch Screens," and numerous other kinds of drapery, rugs, and furniture covers. The first page features a semi-photographic view of the Philadelphia operations.

Rare San Francisco imprint. This songster contains twenty-eight songs (words only), including "My Old Kentucky Home," "Awfully Clever," and "You'll Miss Me When I'm Gone." William Washington Cole (1847-1915) was a partial owner in Barnum & Bailey's Circus. Only one copy located in OCLC, at the Buffalo & Erie Public Library. OCLC 39453291

Cincinnati, 1850. [6],349pp. Original blindstamped cloth, spine gilt. Spine ends chipped, cloth with minor repair along hinges. Two bookplates on front pastedown. Very clean internally. A very good copy. In a cloth slipcase, printed paper label. The most readable work on the Santa Fe Trail, and a classic of Western Americana. The author, only seventeen when he set out for the West, managed to be in the thick of the stirring events of 1846, the taking of New Mexico, the Taos Massacre, and the final subjugation of the province. Photographic titlepage vignette. Publisher's brown cloth, gilt lettered "Wam-dus-ky" on upper cover. Light wear to corners and spine ends. Hinges neatly reinforced, contemporary date note in blue pencil on front fly leaf. Publication date neatly effaced from titlepage and copyright page. Very clean internally. Near fine. Few copies of this account of a late 19th-century hunting trip in North Dakota were printed and, according to Tuttle, none were for sale. "An entertaining and well written account, with some good photographs and sketches of a duck and goose hunting trip to North Dakota in the fall of 1892" - Streeter. In the preface, Tuttle states that some 600 ducks were shot on the excursion, as well as a number of geese and prairie chickens. The German edition of Olmsted's JOURNEY THROUGH TEXAS, one of the best travel books for pre-Civil War Texas (or indeed, the United States). The first German edition of this book appeared in 1857. Olmsted spent considerable time among the German settlements in Texas and is lavish in his praise of them; otherwise he found Texas primitive and backward. Stuttgart, 1854.. Two volumes. [6],390; [6],381pp. Modern three- quarter calf and marbled boards, spines gilt, leather labels. Light scattered foxing. Very good. An important travel narrative by a learned German who was keenly interested in American customs, religions, politics, and folklore. The author's training in theology explains his interest in American religious groups such as Mormons, Shakers, and Dunkards, but his translation and analysis of thirteen Negro spirituals place Busch above the standard observer and may even establish him as the pioneer scholar of American folklore. His itinerary through New York, Ohio, Kentucky, and Missouri provided much material for his absorbent mind to digest. Stockholm, 1785.. [48]pp., printed in double columns in parallel French and Swedish. The notice of the American ratification on the final three pages is printed in Swedish and English. Small quarto. Gathered signatures, stitched. Contemporary ownership signature at bottom of titlepage. Fine. Untrimmed. This is only the third treaty made by the United States with a power other than France (the others were with the Netherlands in 1782 and the peace treaty with Britain of 1783), and by it Sweden became the fourth nation to officially recognize the United States. Benjamin Franklin was the American negotiator, and this treaty offers good evidence of his diplomatic activities in Europe beyond his work with the French and peace negotiations with the British. Although the treaty was concluded on April 3, 1783 (see Evans 18245 for a broadside announcing the event), it was not printed until this Stockholm publication. The second commerce treaty with Sweden (actually in this instance the Kingdom of Sweden and Norway), after the first of 1783. Articles III, IV, and VI in this treaty, regarding trade in goods from the West Indies and Baltic countries, were not ratified by the U.S. Senate, and did not go into force. Wanted poster offering a fifty dollar reward for a prisoner, M.W. Woods, who escaped from the custody of U.S. Marshals near Seattle in 1925. Woods, "Escaped from U.S. Marshall, Western District of Washington on morning of Oct. 17th 1925, by jumping from Santa Fe train to Peabody, Kansas, while being transferred from Seattle, Washington to Houston, Texas." The fugitive, a "Mexican pottery exporter... is ordinarily a good dresser; of genial personality, and is a smooth and plausible talker." With a photographic reproduction of Woods' mugshot.

"Brewerton was a correspondent of the NEW YORK HERALD. The book contains his letters to the newspaper. He was in Kansas Territory from December 1855 to January 1856. He was not a partisan, and his book is valuable because he recorded both Free-State and Pro- slavery versions of what was happening in Kansas Territory" - Dary. Brewerton was in California during the Mexican-American War and in 1848 he travelled east from Los Angeles to Taos over the Old Spanish Trail with Carson, later going farther east on the Santa Fe Trail. Lakeside Press reprint of two otherwise rare pieces of Americana related to the early days of the War of 1812, one account from a soldier of each side, with historical introduction from editor Milo Quaife. This is number thirty-eight in the Lakeside Classics series. Verchères was a fur trader from a prominent Quebec family. He eventually moved to present-day Toronto where he had found success as a businessman at the advent of the War of 1812. He fought for the British under Major-General Brock, and was present at the capture of Fort Detroit.
