This copy inscribed and signed by author at front endpaper, with actor Jean Hersholt's signed bookplate at front pastedown. 'A solitary man is hired, but never meets his employer. His only duty is to organize an extensive library while living in his employer's flat in London. Soon the callers begin arriving, people with influence and colorful lives, whom our narrator befriends through the common bond of mystery: who exactly is Jonathan Scrivener'. Very Good, top front corner bumped, some tiny cloth tears at front spine edge, in Very Good dustjacket (with 7/6 price at spine), modest soiling and wear, shallow loss at top spine end and flap corners. Includes a vintage slipcase

New York: Dodd, Mead and Company, [1891]. First American Edition. Octavo, pink cloth stamped in yellow. Of a total of 1500 copies printed, 900 were for sale in the UK, and 600 were bound with the Dodd, Mead and Company title page. Very Good condition, spine darkened, time toned paper. No dust jacket.

Madrid: Ex typographia Francisci Martinez, 1629. Large Quarto, 11 1/2 x 8 inches. Beautifully rebound edition, brown leather over boards, five raised bands, black leather title plate, gilt lettering and decorations at spine, gilt decorations around outter edges of covers, marbled edges, marbled end papers, beautifully engraved end title page, written in Latin. Title page showing Faith and Religion as pillars upholding the Spanish monarchy within an aedicule or classical architectural element. The Spanish king sits holding a sword and scepter with his foot on the globe between America and Spain. Two figures representing allegorical representations of Spain (a soldier in armor holding a sheaf of wheat) and America (with feathered headdress and holding a sheaf of corn or maize) flank him. Two vignettes at the bottom of the pillars show a man battling a many-headed snake with the motto: 'Domat omnia virtus,' and a beehive with the motto: 'Omnia nos itidem.'
