Minor wear and light soiling, mainly to outer wrappers; small circular "New-York Historical Society" inkstamp dated 23 May 1864 at upper left corner of front wrapper. First edition. Illinois' Civil War governor calls a special session of the legislature in order to enact emergency war preparedness measures. After reviewing the traitorous actions of the "disloyal States" and the Union's "clearly and unmistakably in self-defense" response, Yates beseeches the legislature for sweeping reform, "the enactment of a practicable militia law." This he elaborates in detail. "Let us so act," he concludes dramatically, "that our children and our children's children, when we are laid in the dust, will hold us in grateful remembrance, as we do now bless the heroes and patriots who achieved our independence, and transmitted to us the priceless heritage of American liberty." Quite uncommon. Not in Sabin.

Very short closed tear at right margin; small piece of tape on reverse. Uncommon Civil War map showing the Battle of Port Royal. Publisher unknown, but probably contemporary. The Battle of Port Royal was one of the earliest amphibious operations of the American Civil War, in which a United States Navy fleet and United States Army expeditionary force captured Port Royal Sound, South Carolina, between Savannah, Georgia and Charleston, South Carolina, on November 7, 1861. The sound was guarded by two forts on opposite sides of the entrance, Fort Walker on Hilton Head Island to the south and Fort Beauregard on Phillip's Island to the north.

Very Rare, Unpublished Doctoral Thesis. A Presentation Copy Signed and Inscribed by the Author, Frank Allen Dennis, but the Signature and Inscription is Partially Marked-Out. This Book is in Acceptable Condition. The Gray Buckram Boards have Light Rubbing and Light Edgewear but No Tears, Creases, Stains, or Any Major Damage. The Binding is Strong and Intact but with Slight Sagging, typical in such a Large Book. The Interior is Clean and Unmarked (other than the Partially Marked-Out Author's Signature and Inscription) with No Writing, Highlighting, or Underlining and have Occasional Very Light Foxing but No Tears, Creases, Stains, or Other Major Damage. The Interior does have a Slight Musty Odor, though the Musty Odor is not overpowering, it and Foxing are the only reasons this Book is only in Acceptable Condition. Clean and bright, with an attractive Maryland state seal at upper left of the first page. This November 2nd proclamation "To the Citizens of the State and more especially the Judges of Election" indignantly protests a military order stating that "evil disposed persons" found in Maryland and tolerated by state officials would be attempting to disrupt elections and authorized military personnel and provost marshals to arrest persons loitering about polling places. The text of General Schenck's October 27th General Order No. 53 giving this direction is included, as is Lincoln's directive revoking the offensive portion of Schenck's order. Uncommon.
