Descripción:
New York: J.H. Colton, 1864. Brown pebbled cloth cover stamped in blind and gilt is in pristine condition. 82 x 110 cm unfolded; 10 x 16 cm folded. Full original hand coloring on onion-skin paper. Very Good. Professionally repaired tear around section attaching to the board, and extending beneath the cartouche (hardly noticeable from the front), minor spotting beneath the cartouche. Note that this is not backed with linen as some folding maps are; the paper is nearly onion skin and while not brittle is fragile. We do not recommend that it be flattened for framing. A highly important folding pocket map to be used in the field during the Civil War, in extraordinary condition. LC Civil War Maps 48.2. OCLC lists only five locations for the 1864 edition: LC, Yale, Penn State, Library of Virginia and Wake Forest. Americana Exchange records only one auction record in the last 15 years, and only two before that.

Descripción:
George Wingate entered the Civil War as a private in the New York State Guard. He soon discovered that the militia had very poor shooting skills, and devoted himself to correcting that failing. By the end of the war he had been promoted to Captain, and was recognized as a leading expert on marksmanship training. William Conant Church was the editor of the Army and Navy Journal. After the war he recognized Wingate's expertise and asked him to write a series of articles on marksmanship and rifle training which he published in the Journal.
These articles were immediately widely and highly acclaimed. Church and Wingate decided an organization was needed to facilitate the spread of this knowledge, and together founded The National Rifle Association. The articles from the Army and Navy Journal were collected, and along with additional material were published in 1872 as "Manual for Rifle Practice".
Wingate makes reference following the Preface that this is the Second… Leer más

Richmond: James E. Goode, 1862. Extra Session.  452 pages + appendices of 31 documents and an index of 44 pages.  There is a bookplate on the front pastedown endpaper for Lee Garnett Day, the grandson of William H. Day, member of the Virginia Senate from Isle of Wight County during the Civil War.  The earlier Day's name is listed in the roster of Senators following page 452 in this Journal.  Note: this is not the Journal for the Wheeling Extra Session (held in what was soon to become West Virginia) that is much more common.  A WorldCat searched turned up only 4 copies of the Richmond Journal; the only one in Virginia is held by The Virginia Historical Society, which also has one complete and one incomplete copy from the Confederate Memorial Literary Society.  I cannot locate any copies (other than mine) on the market at this time.. First Edition. Half-Leather. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Book.

New York: Charles Magnus, 1863. 1st Edition 1st Printing. No Binding. Very Good+/No Jacket. An extremely scarce map titled "Panorama of the Mississippi Valley and its Fortifications", which illustrates the theater of war that was the Mississippi River during the American Civil War. Published in New York in 1863 by Charles Magnus. Nicely matted and well framed. This broadside map shows the cities, towns, stores, plantations, mills, academies, etc. along the Mississippi River from St. Louis southward through Memphis, continuing through Vicksburg, and ending at the Gulf of Mexico. Each panel is embellished with a vignette of the important city of that area. Two insets list distances: "various points on the Mississippi, from St Louis to New Orleans", and "Distances navigable by steam on Mississippi River and principal its branches". The granularity of detail in this map can be seen in the photograph of the section around Natchez. From north to south along the course of the… Leer más

A very rare signed edition of privately printed 100 copies of Captain Francis W Dawson's memoir by The News and Courier Book Press. Blue-gray cloth binding decorated with red stamped C.S.A and embellishments. 240 x 150 mm. (9 3/8 x 5 7/8"). 180 pp.
Author signed: "Mr. W.L. Daggett, from F.W. Dawson, Jan 1883". The author inscribed this book to William L. Daggett (1824-1889), a printer working for the Charleston's News and Courier with Dawson. Presumably Mr. Daggett was responsible for printing this book, making this a presentation copy.
This very rare book is a remarkable account of an Englishman traveling to the American South to join the Southern Confederacy. His book includes 18 wartime letters to his friends and family in England.
Note: A few pages (pp 9-16) inside are loosening from spine (not completely detached, there is also no loss to text or tear), hence we have adequately reduced the price. Overall this book is in great condition and would be a beautiful addition to the library of someone… Leer más
