William Iones, 1629. First Edition. Leather Binding. Very Good. Extremely rare (Worldcat records a handful or surviving copies, no copies at auction since 1977). A very good copy, bound in period brown calf, spine with raised bands, spine and covers ruled in blind, red edges. The binding has some unusual features, being without pastedowns, also with text being sewn into the boards, and false 'endpapers' being blanks inserted at front and rear, with stubs (instead of an actual endpaper). The binding has been expertly rebacked in brown calf, preserving original spine, offset to pastedowns fom the leather turn-ins has led to some flaws to edges of endpapers and first and last leaves. Ink signature on rear blank appears to read 'Ed[ward] Shallcross'(?). Notes: Dedication signed: Thomas Paybody. The words 'Fully ... Methodically' are enclosed in brackets on the t.p. [236] pp. Bound without front and back blank, same as the British Library copy. Text in black letter. Besides this copy, we could only find two other copies at auction in the past 100 years. And no earlier, complete copy has ever come up at auction on ABPC or Rare Book Hub. Full contemporary sheep, rebacked to style. Board ruled in blind. Spine lettered and ruled in gilt. Spine stamped in blind with lozenges, including a crest of John Caley. All edges dyed red. A few leaves trimmed close at top edge, occasionally touching headline. Previous owner's old ink signatures on front free endpaper. Bookplate of Fairfax Murray on front pastedown. Overall very good. New York: McDonnell Bros., 1866 Book. Fair. Hardcover. First Edition. Elephant Folio - over 15 - 23" tall. Large brown two-volume Civil War book set with a gilt cover title. Five inch top spine cover chip and a one and one half inch bottom spine chip to volume 1. Volume 2 has a top chip/slight gouge at the spine top and a small chip at the bottom spine. Covers with light to moderate worming. Shaken and cracked bindings with a few loose pages and some old taped tears. The first 8 pages (from the title page) to the second volume are loose from binding and present. Fair minus to Fair plus condition. About 16-1/2 x 12 with 836 total pages. Illustrated, plus maps. Rare two-volume Civil War set (1866 and 1868)! .
