Set of first three volumes on frescos or wall paintings from the 6-volume set of Piroli's iconography of items from the ancient cities of Herculaneum, Stabia and Pompeii unearthed in the mid-18th century. Later volumes covered bronze statues and busts (Vols. 4 and 5) and lamps and candelabra (Vol. 6).
Vol. 1: 48 copperplates with 48pp text explanation; Vol. 2: 47 (of 48) copperplates with 48pp text explanation; Vol. 3, 30 copperplates with 30pp text explanation. The plates are based on those in Ottavio Antonio Bayardi's seminal work of 1752, and depict scenes from Greek and Roman mythology, cupids playing, Bacchantes dancing, etc.
Condition: Bindings scuffed and hinges worn, but good crisp impressions of the copperplates throughout. Volume two with some waterstaining to plates 24-48.
Text in Italian describes the content of each fresco, and often includes details of the date and location of its discovery within the ruins. The author's name does not appear on the title pages, but only in the Avisso of each volume.
