Paris: Chez Everat A good copy of this scarce work in contemporary half leather binding. Undated but 1798. Imagines the continuation of La Perouse's voyage after Botany Bay, describing his death, and the discovery of an island peopled by French escapees from the Revolution. This copy has a red leather spine with gilt compartments and gilt titles. The boards and endpapers are marbled. The spine has a little wear at the bottom and the boards have wear to edges. Internally the endpapers are marbled. Contents: title page, text 397pp plus errata 2pp. The original page marker is present. The paper is very brown-toned to around p300 and more lightly toned with occasional light marking to the end of the work. Otherwise in good clean condition.

This map illustrates one of the most important discoveries in the history of world trade, the discovery of the Strait of Le Maire or, as the Nodal brothers christened it, the Strait of San Vicente. The Nodal expedition was a reconnaissance mission sponsored by King Philip III of Spain in 1619. The purpose was to confirm the recent discoveries of Jacob Le Maire and Willem Schouten of a passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific to the south of Tierra del Fuego.

Near fine: a couple of very minor scratches on spine, a little fraying at head of spine, slipcase shows a little shelf wear. Interior of volume and front and back boards are pristine.This volume was a personal gift from Rainier III, Prince of Monaco (1923 - 2005) to the eminent medievalist Kenneth M. Setton (1914 – 1995) on the occasion of a visit by Prince Rainier and Princess Grace to her hometown of Philadelphia in the 1960's. (Professor Setton was at the time Director of Libraries at the University of Pennsylvania.) Bound into the volume is the prince's card, with a note in his handwriting to professor Setton.This is a deluxe binding on heavy hand-laid paper with deckled edges and gilt page tops. It is one of a limited number of copies; this copy however is not numbered, apparently because it came from the royal family. It appears to be similar to the 400 Papeteries du Marais exemplars as the pages do not bear the watermarked arms of the Grimaldi family. This edition was published on 11… Leer más
