New York: Random House, 1973. Uncorrected First Proof copy. Octavo. 190pp. Publisher's red paper wraps titled in black to front cover. Some light scuffing, and a couple of spots of grubbiness to the covers, but essentially a clean, tight copy. Internally clean, a pencil annotation "April..?" to the title page. A scarce proof copy of the first book on Black reparations and which Morrison guided into print as an editor at Random House. Written by a white professor at Yale, Morrison felt the book was "an important contribution to the fledgling reparations debate." A significant proof on its own, of a book that was an origin point for the intellectual debate about reparations for many decades, but also because it documents Morrison's incredible tenure and astute publishing history during her tenure at Random House. Necessarily scarce.

Singed by the author on former owner's book plate by the author, dates 2/14/65 on front end paper. First edition.Shadow and Act is a collection of essays by Ralph Ellison, published in 1964. The writings encompass the two decades that began with Ellison's involvement with African-American political activism and print media in Harlem, Ellison's emergence as a highly acclaimed writer with the publication of Invisible Man, and culminating with his 1964 challenge of Irving Howe's characterization of African-American life, "Black Boys and Native Sons", with his now famous essay, "The World and the Jug". 1866 1ed Jefferson Davis Prison Life Civil War Slavery Confederate President CSA"A sympathetic account of Davis's confinement at Fortress Monroe; by the physician assigned to attend him; includes several long conversations." (Nevins)
A rare first edition of the "Prison Life of Jefferson Davis" by John Joseph Craven. According to Sabin, this first edition was printed on both small and large paper and includes a "Political Letter written to a Citizen of Illinois." This work also 'helped cement Davis's image as a Lost Cause martyr." (Boritt, Holzer). It was
"written by the physician in attendance during the imprisonment in Fortress Monroe…A kind of diary of the daily life, giving the gist of conversations. Written by a Union man, but sympathetic and forgiving. Unlikely to please the rabid element of either side." (Larned, Lit. of Am. History).
Includes full-page woodcut engraving of Davis in prison.

1864 Civil War 1st ed 60th New York Infantry Union Gettysburg SLAVERY RailroadsThe 60th-New York Volunteer Infantry was a famous Civil War Union regiment known for playing an important role in various battles including the Battle of Gettysburg. Author Richard Eddy wrote an account of the regiment and its involvement in the war; however, according to Nevins, this work is much more a "damnation of the South and slavery than a regimental history." Other notable contents include reports on railroads and railroad lines, description of Union barracks, and of course descriptions of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg.
